Momento Mori, Pater

Momento Mori, Pater

A Poem by Mr. Henley

Momento Mori, Pater

Jared Hirsch

At the bottom of the bottle,

Oh, just one more fill,

What that last bit provides,

My, oh my, what a thrill.

You’ve never been caught,

Too smart for the law,

I can tear at your heart,

But there’s no change at all.

Promises broken,

Nights long wept,

For the bottom of the bottle,

Will be where my tears are kept.

Memento mori, father,

We’re all bound to pass,

How shameful it would be,

If your death came from a glass.

I can feel the scene,

It’s long imagined in my mind,

Kept in some dark corner,

Which I pray life does not find.

My mother’s in danger,

My brother and I too,

You’re a drunken helmsmen,

And there’s nothing we can do.

At the bottom of the bottle,

It’s where I see my haunt,

And at the bottom of the bottle,

Is where you circumvent life’s taunt.
