NINEA Chapter by Jared GraceCHAPTER
NINE Draconian
Kingdom The
Council had been at it for 3 days. As Draconians, they could go for long hours
without rest. But soon, they too would need it. They'd also been subjects of
genetic manipulation and whenever they pushed themselves, they suffered the
painful consequences later. Even
draconians grew old. And two of the three members of the council were. The
healing factor of the draconian wore down after a few centuries, causing the
draconian to age albeit slower than a normal human. The two older draconians
were Martin and Drake. Martin was the oldest and the strongest in terms of
physical ability. Drake was the most cunning. Tim
was the third member of the council. The tiebreaker whenever the other two were
in disagreement. As a hybrid he was a physical representation of both sides. Martin
happened to be the werewolf whilst Drake was the vampire. Of the three, however
Tim's ability was the most dangerous. They
had been discussing the death of Mira-neth, the Elkin Queen. They had sent Max
in to assassinate her. She was preparing a weapon that could really hurt the
draconian race. According to Tim's source from within. "Is
he going to be enough?" Tim asked. "Of
course not", Drake said. "Then
why did you send only him?" Tim asked. "We
didn't", Martin said. Tim
looked at him wistfully. "Who else did you send? And how come I'm the last
to know?" Tim
and Martin exchanged glances. "Because you wouldn't approve", Martin
said. "What
did you do? Who did you send?"
Shawn We'd
easily entered the Elkin kingdom, avoiding Elkin security through portals.
Atlas had a working knowledge of all the portholes in the Elkin kingdom.
Coupled with James's ability to teleport, infiltration was a walk in the park. But,
a lot didn't sit right with me. Atlas was half-elkin. But to have this much
knowledge of elkin security and geography, Atlas had to have more than a few
connections within. He probably was someone important before he was banished.
Unfortunately I didn't know enough about Elkin history to come up with someone. I
asked Lisa about it but she gave me short cold answers. She was still mad. She
must have been bitterly disappointed. I
was quiet throughout dinner. We managed to get a house deep within Elkin
territory. Atlas managed to disfigure his appearance with magic and used his
alias as a human merchant to secure a place for us. Thalia
came over to talk to me. "Hey ", she said punching me in the
shoulder. "Looks like you had a fight with your little girlfriend",
she teased. She thought I was upset because of Lisa. I sighed. "I
knew Atlas was interesting. How did Atlas's crew get formed?" I asked. Thalia
sighed. "I don't really know. In fact no one really knows the whole story.
Except Atlas and James. And for them it's a sore subject." "He's
dead", a man said. I
looked at him. He didn't look familiar. I had been hanging around with Atlas's
crew for over two weeks. And I'm usually good with faces. It comes with the
job. "What's
your name?" I asked. "Bishop",
he said. He took a swig of his beer and got up and walked away. "Who's
that guy? Do you know him?" I asked. Thalia
shrugged. "People join Atlas's crew all the time. Not many of them get the
publicity you do. But then, not many people have your resume", she said.
She was trying to change the subject. "What
do you know?" I asked. "You
don't really want to know that, do you? You really want to know how we got by
Elkin security so easily. You've been here before obviously." The question
was coming. "Who did you kill?" I'd
fallen right into her trap. I either had to drop the issue or divulge sensitive
info. I backed off. But
I couldn't sleep. I simply stared at the ceiling. It was about twelve midnight
when I heard voices talking. Two women. One of the voices sounded familiar. I
got up and walked into the living room. I saw the first woman. She didn't look
familiar. Her eyes danced around the room and her hair was shaggy. But she
managed to keep calm although every part of her seemed high-strung. The
other woman had her back turned to me so I couldn't see her face. But her body
type, her voice, her composure. The words involuntarily left my mouth. "Mom?" She
turned around.
The
workers in the Elkin factory looked up as they heard the glass ceiling shatter.
They didn't have time to react. The man spread his legs apart as he landed. The
guards ran towards him. And that's when the explosions started. They went
around in a circle, engulfing the entire area in flames. They
pointed their weapons at the man. The weapons self-destructed. Then body parts
were sent flying. They screamed in pain a second after. The
man grabbed the last still whole man. He'd chosen him as his messenger.
"Tell her that I'm coming for her", he said. "Who
are you?" the man asked. His legs were quivering. He could barely look his
assailant in the eyes. "The
angel of death". © 2016 Jared Grace |
