A Time To Kill

A Time To Kill

A Chapter by Jared Grace

He run through the bushes, the trees nothing but a blur. His senses were heightened and he was on full alert. He could hear the bats flapping and even hearts beating. He glanced at the moon. It was a calm and quiet night. The moon's beautiful silver light illuminated the entire forest. He had come into an open field, where only tall strands of grass where. But he had no time to stop and gaze at the scenery. Tonight he was on a mission. Every few minutes, he stopped and examined his surroundings. To make sure he wasn't being followed. But now he was sure. Someone was  tailing him.

"Nascar", he said.

She seemingly emerged out of nowhere. It was one of her many abilities. To be able to be undetectable to the senses. It was especially effective against someone like him. But he'd trained himself to detect her. It had just paid off.

Her serpentine eyes scanned around then were riveted on  him. She hissed. His body muscles tensed prepared for action. Suddenly he felt his body muscles relax as if he was given a highly concentrated sedative. "Your powers are useless against me. I experimented on you, remember?"

"How long has it been?"

The best biologist in the kingdom, Nascar Shadesmith had escaped years ago. As a scientist her research had given birth to monstrosities. She had been one of the military's best scientists, if not the best. It backfired when their bodies morphed uncontrollably or they went insane. Draconians had always had trouble controlling their animal urges. Her experiments had made finding a solution urgent.

"What do you want?" he asked her.

Her eyes narrowed. Almost into white slits. "What do I want? You know what I want. I'm getting…hungry". She started to walk towards me. I started to inch backwards. Every step was like lifting a ton. "It's been ages…"

Was she referring to the last time they'd seen each other? Or since she'd left the kingdom?

"I won't be used by you again", he said. It was a mistake. He knew it as soon as he said those words. It was like a child yelling "I'm not scared of you!" when he's really scared.

"You will always be mine Max. Besides this isn't about you Max. I always get what I want. It's what happens to others that's the issue. So let's not play hard to get shall we?"

Was she…? She was threatening him. She was threatening to ruin the kingdom. He knew her well enough to know that's what she meant. And she'd known him long enough to know he cared about the Draconia more than almost anything else. After all, he'd abandoned her for it.

Nascar was a subject to her own experiments. And it had come with all kinds of side-effects. But for some reason I seemed to be able to calm those reactions. Even she didn't know why that was the case. But every now and again she'd come find me. In a way it was ironic. She'd created me and she could control me but she was dependent on me. I looked at her carefully. She looked a bit dishelved and  very untogether. Her hair was a mess. Her eye color kept changing. Her fangs receded and protruded again.

I wasn't going to reason with her. It was useless to when she was in this state.

He lay by the fireside as her back was turned to him. He thought of the mission.  By daybreak he would be in the Elkin Kingdom. Where was Nascar going? He wouldn't ask and she probably wouldn't tell. There was a problem that was rearing its head in the Elkin kingdom. If it wasn't taken care of soon, Draconians would be doomed. And the linchpin was Mira-neth, the ruler of the kingdom. The directive was clear, she had to be eliminated.

About
I finished my first trilogy: the chosen. Which was ironic because I wanted it to be anything but. Trilogies are so cliche now. Another change is that I've gone from committed evangelical to full blow.. more..
