"It is the duty of us who bear the title of poet, whether a title self-bestowed, or formally given to us, to put forth the barren truth of all things. That duty is one not to be shirked, for if we do not pose as a voice for the truths in every small matter, who will?We must explore every aspect of our thoughts, from the happiest memories to the most dismal of futures, the shattered terrain of war on mind, body and heart, and the effects of romances both true and lasting, and swift and fleeting. Some have much more simple truths to display, the words come on the more tranquil scenes, required to undertake the display of beauty when words will scarcely cover such astounding experiences .Others have the task of flirting with insanity, understanding fear for what it is, the base nature of the world, the appeal of bloodshed. Some of our brethren have fallen in this undertaking, for it has the chance of eating away the mind. Not everyone can be called to experience life as fully or as detailed as a poet can." -John Stussy
"Basically, writing isn't just something that you do. You don't just say; "I feel like writing something today". Otherwise, what you've scribbled down isn't true, it's not even the slightest bit you. " -Phalen Schuyler
"A poet sees life differently than others, we understand what life is about. A poet can show people that life is too short to hate or dislike others, your enemies can become your best friends. So love everyone you meet even if you only meet them once. Embrace life, hold those you are close to closer, and never quit being yourself."~JaniK
"Maybe there is a duty to the self to be as faithful as possible to whatever urge of those you so thoughfully describe drives us. I also feel increasingly that there is a duty to honour the tribe of poets, never to see ourselves as grand individuals. And poets definitely have a duty to those who read or listen to them to give them something worth having. And in tough times, maybe it even falls to some poets to represent or nourish the spirit of their nation, or all of humaniy, in some special way." -Orlando Furioso
"It is the duty of a poet, whether young or old, to stay true to their writing, true to their pencil and page, and thus trueto one's self-originality, consistency, loyalty. I'm not asking all poets to be amazing--despite the fact that some are, and all want to be, it is the varied tones, styles, and proficiency of all poets that make our bookshelves such cultured, amazing places."-Kira
"Sir, I admit your General Rule,
That every Poet be a Fool;
Though you, yourself serve best to show it,
That every Fool be NOT a Poet!"
--William Wordsworth, provided by Mark
"My own personal definition of poetry is a reflection of feelings, whether it be feelings from personal or not so personal insight. There is a message to be delivered, a feeling to share. A poets duty would be to have the reader feel what he is feeling. Happy, sad, urgent, mad... the reader should feel something. Duty calls, but the delivery is up to you. " -Babbette Francis
"Poetry is a place.
It's where I put my heart
and you pick it up to see.
My triumphs and scars
are engraved there.
It is impossible for us
to keep such things
to ourselves
and so we share." -Emily Burns
"What can I say,I bow in true respect to a poet and a writer who is very true to his work..
As i see it,you will say the truth about everything in a very nice way, even if the truth hurts
You will love all people who are within sight and without..you will try to make life better
with your lovely imagination you will draw some lovely pictures of life, you will call for all
to come to dream of one day we may live in a better world where love is the only word
the most honorable word, hate and prejudice should have no place in our world,we should fight
I see a poet as a lovely fighter to help bring beautiful dreams to come true, nothing is
impossible,for a poet and a writer is not just any person,he is a man,she is a woman
with such powers and magic that will make everything possible, everything within..
How I truely believe in that..we can do everything..We are such a power, lovely power of peace.."~bluessadmood
"A poet should reach inside for something and grab it with both hands to be splashed across the pages of a blank canvas. Everyone tells their own fears, hates, loves dreams ect. To be able to share with just one person and to make a connection that your words truly have meaning to someone else is an amazing feeling and accomplishment. Let us cross the bridge of creativeness and share our inner worlds." -Captain Blackheart, The Legend
Add to it if you like, I will be giving full credit paragraph by paragraph, thought this might be interesting to have, and post the whole thing yourself when you have your opinion. See if we can get this going around, what poets claim their duties are.

A well written statement spelling out the duties of a poet or indeed any writer To educate and entertain by sharing thoughts. Communicating by whatever means what you as an individual see as poetry and why poeticpiers
