A Poet's Dueties

  "It is the duty of us who bear the title of poet, whether a title self-bestowed, or formally given to us, to put forth the barren truth of all things.  That duty is one not to be shirked, for if we do not pose as a voice for the truths in every small matter, who will?  We must explore every aspect of our thoughts, from the happiest memories to the most dismal of futures, the shattered terrain of war on mind, body and heart, and the effects of romances both true and lasting, and swift and fleeting.  Some have much more simple truths to display, the words come on the more tranquil scenes, required to undertake the display of beauty when words will scarcely cover such astounding experiences .  Others have the task of flirting with insanity, understanding fear for what it is, the base nature of the world, the appeal of bloodshed.  Some of our brethren have fallen in this undertaking, for it has the chance of eating away the mind.  Not everyone can be called to experience life as fully or as detailed as a poet can." -John Stussy

Add to it if you like, I will be giving full credit paragraph by paragraph, thought this might be interesting to have, and post the whole thing yourself when you have your opinion. See if we can get this going around, what poets claim their duties are.

It is the duty of a poet, whether young or old, to stay true to their writing, true to their pencil and page, and thus true to one's self--originality, consistency, loyalty. I'm not asking all poets to be amazing--despite the fact that some are, and all want to be, it is the varied tones, styles, and proficiency of all poets that make our bookshelves such cultured, amazing places.
