How did His innocent first breaths

Under a shining star

Become an exhausted mother’s sigh

Under the bright Wal-Mart sign?

 

How did those first beautiful gifts

Of the magi

Become a missed mortgage payment

In order to give the kids a socially acceptable spoil

With credit card debt that takes an entire year to repay?

 

How did the breath of heaven

Get lost in the red suit and bright lights

The commercial gain?

The marketing ploy?

The sales tactic?

 

How did the simple joy of spending the day with family

Turn into “Yes We Are OPEN”

So that someone could make one more dollar?

 

Why is the "perfect" holiday scene

always people eating, laughing

spending, exhaustion..

and not families praying?

 

How did the people become so calloused

And selfish?

But hide behind their plastic cards

and santa hats

In the name of Holiday Cheer

Good Will

Peace on Earth?

 

Why is there always “Holiday Politics”

And out doing one another ?

 

Why is there unwritten expectation from friends

And family?

Why can't anyone be genuine, and thoughtful all the other days of the year?

Why put on a front?

 

Why is it a day to be drunk

And over eat?

When it was humble

And simple

and gentle

and quiet

 

Why is it loud, and glitzy?

Over done?

over dressed?

over spent?

 

When it should be meek and innocent

And quietly celebratory

 

How did it become an exhausted mother’s sigh

And expectations set too high?

When it should be about His innocent first breaths

Under a shining star

Oh, I absolutely identify with your 'questions' here...it is one reason why I don't like the Christmas Season although I love the Christ-Child..."A SAVIOUR born to us"...saving us from the material excesses, from the elusive pleasures of shop till you drop, from hypocrisy and pride in delusional achievements.....to gift us with true JOY and PEACE out of his abundant store of LOVE and GRACE !

But a very well-put-together, perfect rant to shake people and wake people up with the true simplicity that any SACRED day deserves. Even though I'm out of the Christmas loop nowadays, it is still just such an overwhelming time with the commercialization of a day of supposed to be about the quiet gifts and joys the creator gives. Instead it is all about what you have written. Blessed are you to stop and recognize.

I do love this. I'm not a religious person though I celebrate Christmas with my family. It's the time of year where people take advantage of it just another reason to party or their only time being true to their religion.
