Love, Your Step Mother

For Robert, Jake, Evelyn, & Brett my beautiful step children

Dear child of my heart-

 

You probably didn’t notice

The path that he was on had changed

Perhaps he didn’t want you to see

 

You may not have realized

Because you have your own life now

You were nearly grown

 

I am sure you felt the tension

Exuding from him

Perhaps you wondered if it was something you did wrong

 

It wasn’t your fault

 

You may not have

Realized that he is just a man

With needs and desires

A human

 

Perhaps in your eyes

He would always be the same

His days to achieve and dream

Behind him

 

But they weren’t

 

There are things he will probably never talk about

Hurt and resentment that grew over time

None of which was because of you

 

I wasn't there, so I don't know

All that happened

Whatever pain you feel.. I am so sorry.

 

Take a moment

You are now grown

Think about the past a little

Try to put the pieces into perspective

 

You may be able to conceivably agree

Maybe not

It’s not that your opinion doesn’t matter

 

He is a man

 

He is your father

 

He loves you

 

Perhaps you thought when he met me

That he was a monster

That he had no right

 

You may have thought he loved you less

Because he fell in love with me

And my children

 

He didn’t.. he loved you more

 

In your wondering

I hope you realize that

When I fell in love with him

I fell for you also

 

If you ever wonder if you

Are any less important to me

You are not

 

I know I am not your mom,

You have one already

And I would never want to replace...

 

But, please know

You have your own throne

In my heart

 

It is etched in gold

And has your name imprinted

It is yours, and it completes the circle of our family

In your place equally as important as any other

 

I did not have the privilege of seeing you

Take your first steps

But I pray for the steps you take toward future

 

I may not have brought you into the world

But you were born into my life

And my heart

 

In case you were wondering

 

I may not be what you wanted for him

Or yourself,

 

But I am here

And I love you and always will
