Love on a LeashA Poem by Jane MagnaniA poem about loving someone of a different race.Love on a Leash: Blue eyes dart through a darkened room. A pair stares back, green like the jungle they are creating. Hearts entwined in vines wrapping around veins and stains covering bodies that lost their trail of breadcrumbs ten miles back. Lost. Civilized savages, safe addicts, clean cavemen, knowledgeable idiots, we lost our labels long ago. Green eyes pierce through a pitch-black sky, A pair stares back, blue like the ocean we’re drowning in. We got stranded and landed in the middle of an abandoned ocean, Our life raft constructed on reversed blueprints and misprints, Stranded. We are lost. So beautifully lost. We have the world in our hands but we drop it so we can walk on stardust, Time stops just for us but we let it pass so we can see the future, Life and death dance dangerously with us in the dark. We don’t care. They always said diversity was dangerous. That we should keep our love at arm’s length, And our secrets even closer. Diversity doesn’t divide. It conquers. Look around right now. There are hundreds of different backgrounds all painting the same picture. There are hundreds of different stories all writing the same book. But you are mine, my beautiful misfit, And I wouldn’t have it any other way. Don’t you dare keep your love on a leash. © 2018 Jane MagnaniAuthor's Note
