Amelia’s Lament

By: Jana McClure

When cold settles and darkness sleeps

O’er my weary head,

He keeps me comfort; pain he reaps

As like a sheep I’m lead.

Springing happiness bumbles sweet

In memories of old.

For now, at least, I have a treat

Of his touch; his cold.

Like a blanket in a blizzard,

He comforts with his voice.

To have his draining company

I’ve agreed to by my choice.

Happiness is his twin,

But opposite the same.

Both are sudden, bursting,

And empty, with no claim.

His nemesis is Joy,

Which doesn’t choke or starve

But gives and gives in vain

despite the scars you’ve carved.

I, myself, am tentative

To the relief offered here.

A wretched snake, a blatant fake,

An identity I adhere.

So with my tired eyes,

Which sparkle though devoid,

I listen to his lies

And see my hope destroyed.

It’s ‘what’s best for me’

He murmurs while I sleep.

While thoughts of paths my trust can take

He leads in sorrow deep.

So no worries, no regrets,

Don’t pity for me, please.

I have a helper, better yet,

A guardian, pain he sees.

I have a friend consoling,

Teaching me what’s right,

Though although I’m feeling empty,

I think that I’m alright.
