Life.

Life.

A Story by James Crotty

A deep hole in the ground. Life. Darkness everywhere except the faint glow above you. A light at the end of a long, dark tunnel. You claw at it all your life, always wanting to see what provides that glow. You make it a few feet off the sturdy ground, but the wet earth you cling onto collapses, sending you to the bottom once again. You feel helpless and begin to cry, nothing matters anymore. You cry your tears into the damp soil until theres nothing left to cry about.
You take a deep breath through your nose. Life. You smell it all around you, pushing its way through the dirt and the rocks. That beautiful smell of the base of all living things. You taste it on your tongue. It tastes fresh and new, reassuring you that you are still alive! Slowly, you push up with all fours. You stand there staring up at the faint glow.
That glow of hope and you wonder how you can reach it. Life. You push up your sleeves and begin to climb again. You make it twice as far as last time, but again the wall collapses on top of you. Now you sit there in the dirt, exhausted and beaten. You wonder why the walls wont stay strong for you. Why is this cruel world treating you so? Why doesn't it just be rid of you right now?
Ah, but then it hits you as you smell that unmistakable smell of earth. Thats life.
