Free As The Bird

Free As The Bird

A Poem by James Whitefall

Poems are that of metaphor. What does it mean to you?

Free As The Bird

Birds,
Their refuge is high among the tree line,
Away from the rules of man, their sneaky and suspicious lies,
Away from the prisons and jails, under the guards watchful eye,

Birds,
With their feathers and wings,
They defy gravity and soar among the clouds,
Proving the rules don’t apply they stand on the tallest mountain,
And look down with an untrusting glare,

They squeak and whistle
They tweet while men cry,
Not having to obey,
Listening only to the laws of nature,

Not to men who try and trap them,
Not to society who’s pressure tries to force them to the ground
Not to a King who's decree has become new law,

No. Freedom is the blood on their beaks from the day’s catch,
The rain falling from the leaves near their secluded nest,
The open sky whose limits knows no bounds
Because when the bird first learns to fly,
He does it before he hits the ground,
Because he's born with an instinct to be free

I lie among the grass and watch as they sail by,
For if I was a bird, where would I decide to fly,
But no, my wings are clipped,
So I’m stuck on the ground,
Where I’ll always stay,
And I'll feel the same,
So please just forget me.

First of all, i sincerely enjoyed this poem. I appreciated the descriptive qualities in your writing as you drew parallels or commented on the disparity between birds and humans. I think you explored the phrase, "free as a bird" in a way that I might have expected touching on the points that I could have predicted, but you changed it up at the end and threw a twist into the poem , especially with the last line

So please just forget me

The poem took on a new meaning to me, it became less about the birds and naturally more about the speaker who contemplates the birds, but can clearly separate himself from them. It's a bitter ending, i feel, which contrasts the soaring description of the birds. It leaves me questioning.

Overall a good read, thank you for sharing.
