My Funeral Song For You

I lost a dear friend yesterday. She gave in to her demons and left a void in the world that can never be filled.

This life is pretty hard when you go at it alone

but alone is how we came here and alone is how we'll go.

A friend is a friend forever no matter where we are

the miles that came between us really aren't that far.

Now here I sit by myself just thinking through the years.

Time has been my real crime and it's time that brings the tears.

Tonight I'll share a memory, it's been a long time since I thought

about the girl in Alabama years ago who stole my heart.

Here's to you my sweet Virginia Ann, the first girl I ever loved

You're singing with the angels now looking down from up above.

I didn't have to time to tell you, I thought you always knew

Now all I have to offer is this funeral song for you.

You went off to college and I went off to war

with a picture of a pretty girl standing in her mamma's door.

It's been twenty-five years today, since we said goodbye

yesterday you left me a little emptier inside.

There's a time for love and laughter and a time to pray and mourn

There never is enough time for the ones that we adore.

If I could have one minute back I know what I would do

I would hold you close in my arms and say that I loved you.

i think you meant "angels" in those lines..
This is so well expressed, but really, James, I think she knew and if not then, she does now....
In times like this, and i have experienced them also, we always wish we would have said more, showed we cared more...i think it just goes with the territory of grief.
