Forgiveness

Forgiveness

...Still waiting for her to come around and ask for my forgiveness...

Forgiveness

We don’t forgive because we’re weak,

But because we’re strong enough to look past the pain to what’s more important,

What’s more important is how much I care,

How much your touch used to make me melt,

How much I miss the way your head rests over my hearts with every embrace,

Yes I forgive you,

But forgiveness doesn’t come with a simple apology and a gentle smile,

Forgiveness comes with days of pain, hours of deep thinking, minutes of understanding and counting the seconds, minutes, hours, days between texts,

We don’t forgive because what happened doesn’t matter to us,

But because the person matters so much,

So much that I would go through the pain of it again,

So much that I could be surrounded by other girls but never lose sight of you,

I don’t forgive you because I’m weak,

I forgive you because I’m strong enough to let go of the past to better the future.

This is great poem, and very heartfelt. I think a lack of forgiveness is a form of protection, an attempt of protecting oneself from further pain. But a lack of forgiveness chains a person to the pain, for as long as the person remains in a unforgiving state. And you were so right when you said that an act of forgiveness doesn't mean that what happened doesn't matter. So many people confuse that fact, and think that if they forgive someone that they are saying what happened was okay, or not so bad. Forgiveness is not approval, it is an act of freeing oneself from pain. We forgive another person, not for his or her benefit, but for our own. And as you so wonderfully wrote, there is something more important. I really like your poem, great job!
I would very much like it if you'd review one of my poems :)
