So You Say I'm Not a Poet

So You Say I'm Not a Poet

A Poem by Edmond Dantes

So you say I'm not a poet?

Shall I take up the wrench

& put down the pen?

Pick up a rifle & drink from my inkwell

Or would you rather me take this pencil

& stab myself in the neck!

Climb scaffold--build buildings,

Would that earn your respect?

Perhaps, I'll be the prosecutor

& send you away

Lifetime behind bars

In a northern Cali prison called Pelican Bay.

Maybe I'm the guard that'll put you in solitary

With nothing to do,

Then I'll issue you paper & pen

& You can try your hand at poetry too!

Then I'll toss your cell & rip your verses to shreds

& laugh as I watch you go insane in the head.

Well, this is so good, Who can say what poetry is? it comes in all different forms, not just the written word, but in a birdsong or a piece of art..

Then I'll issue you paper & pen
& You can try your hand at poetry too!

I love these lines...

Some people don't understand poetry and therfore condemn it as stupid.

It takes alot of talent to write and you have proved that you have that talent

loved it

"Then I'll toss your cell & rip your verses to shreds" hehe I find this funny with a lil bit of anger to go with... talk about ventilating...reminds me of a time when I used to let bad criticism get to me...gotta keep it moving (whew)....

wow...very direct and and somewhat angry...no one has to prove themselves a poet except by the words they pour from the soul...

oh my god, i love this poem! This was such a great read! What a perfect retaliation to those who fail to appreciate poets and their work! I can especially relate to this one because a long time ago, someone told me that i will never write good poetry, because i write obscure..and that you cant write obscure poetry just for the sake of obscurity. After a long time I realized that people dont write obscure poetry because they want to..they write it because that's the way it needs to be. I absolutely congratulate you for this work!

Well this one comes full circle with a poetic justice ending~ at that~it takes another poet to understand just where we are coming from when we write our art~ Non writers deem poetry and the written word as a waste of time and useless activity ~ THey just don't get it~lol we mad poets are quite the lot~THanks for sharing this creative piece~Fran Marie
