R & R

R & R

A Poem by Alice Bliss
"

Bittersweet.

"

R & R

She laughs lazily, lounging in her hammock
hair hanging limp and damp from the lake
summer sky spotted with marshmallow clouds
and her blonde dog bounding after a butterfly.

Afternoon sun sparkles off the boy’s slanted eyes,
as he tickles her tanned tummy and kisses her feet.
Promises are made on a perfect day…
pledges of the heart & secrets of the soul.

He crawls into her cocoon and croons a love song
but the binding breaks and they fall.
The dog barks, startled.

Happy couple giggle and grope one another,
drawing deep kisses from each other’s mouths,
drowning in each other’s eyes.

Heavenly hours while away
and when he walks back to his truck
the dog and the girl plead and whimper.
Twenty-nine more weeks of war for him.
She huddles in the remains of the hammock …
hoping.

how bright of you to take us here, to remind us, and sadly, he wont be the same when he returns...
