Mute.

They wonder why I’m mute, why I’ve given up my speech.

Are they really that blind? Surely they should figure out.

Can they remember all those times they ignored my every word.

When I could stop half way through, and they never had a clue.

Was I really not important, did I mean so little to them?

They were meant to be my family, meant to be my friends.

So I sit here all alone, haven’t spoken in some time.

Now they say I’m crazy, now they treat me like a freak.

In a way it’s better than before, better than being ignored.

Author's Note

Often I stop half way through a story during conversation with my 'friends' they don't even notice I'm no longer talking. Because they never listen. I excitedly share an event that happened in my day, have to repeat his name over and over before my father even notices I've spoken in the first place. I tell my mama something she just starts talking about something else entirely, without any recognition of me speaking. My boyfriend, I love him so much so I get excited sharing everything about me yet at times it's like he doesn't even care..he dismisses it with these stupid remarks such as 'Alright then...' or 'fair enough' No I'm not currently mute but sometimes I wonder if they'd even notice if i was eternally silent.

i love this because i can relate to it, i hate feeling ignored and this put it all in a perfect wrap for me-exactly how i feel. but not only me; i see the reaction on my mum's face whens someone completely talks over her, i hate that, but i love this poem xx

I really like this! I know how you feel! I have even stopped what I was saying and started saying gibberish stuff and they didn't even notice! I think we need to pick better friends! But what can you do about family?? I am A LOT quieter than I used to be, for this very reason. But I am alot older than you! Great write!

So good...it must be endemic to society because my husband does the same, I will stop and he does not notice, and he is always interrupting me to talk about something else entirely! I can relate!
