It wasn’t until everybody left, that Zee was able to show his true emotion, show how truly devastated he was.

Once Tera had left, Zee was finally alone. He stumbled down to the cellar and when he came back, he wasn’t empty handed. In his hand was the fifty year old bottle of wine that his grandfather had given him before he died. He opened the bottle, and started drinking from it. Zee was never too fond of drinking, but at that moment, he felt as though that was what he needed to do.

An hour later, when every last drop of that wine was gone, Zee still didn’t feel any better. He felt worse, for he hated that wine, in fact he hated everything at that moment. His only daughter was snatched away from him and it hurt him so badly that tears welled up in his eyes. Zee never cried, he didn’t cry at his mother’s funeral, nor his wife’s not even his sister’s. It wasn’t that he didn’t love them; of course he did, it was all because of Kaetalita.

Kaetalita had always seen her father as strong, and she looked up to him, Zee didn’t want her to see him break, so he’d always bottled his emotions up, but now she’s gone, there’s nothing keeping him from breaking, and he was breaking. Zee had a rough sleep that night, continuously tossing and turning up until the point where he just couldn’t stay in bed. He came out of his room and sat in Kaetalita’s favourite chair. He spotted an album on the nearby bookshelf and slowly reached out for it and began to look carefully through the pages.

Pages and pages of Kaetalita- her first steps, the first time she lost a tooth, her first time on a surf board, her first date, and the image on the very last page brought Zee to tears, it was a picture of Kaetalita, with Traci, her mother on one side and Zee on the other. They were pretending to kiss her chubby little cheeks and every one of them had a huge goofy grin upon their faces. That was the day Traci died.

The next morning Zee went down to the local flower market and purchased four white lilies, one for each of the women he has lost in his life. He had a thought last night when he tried to go to sleep. Finally he arrived at Kaetalita’s surf spot, the place where she surfed every day since she was 8 years old. No one else would ever dare to surf there, until Tera came to town. A flood of memories washed through Zee’s brain, but reminiscing wasn’t the reason for his journey here. One by one he placed the lilies onto the ocean and he watched them float away into the horizon. A tribute to the four ladies who meant the most to him.

Eventually Zee decided to go home. He picked up his bag and turned around. To his utter embarrassment, Tera was walking towards him with his surf board.

“Are you still going on the tour?” Zee asked him, sniffing back the tears and hoping against hope that Tera hadn’t noticed them dripping down his face.

“I haven’t decided yet, but they have told me I can postpone it to another month and join them in Bali, which is probably what I’ll do.”

“That’s a good idea. Use that time to read her diaries and relive her memories, Tera. She deserves that much”

“I haven’t had a chance to even think about them yet” Tera admitted while his ears turned a light shade of pink.

“Read them, you know that’s what she wants, don’t forget her, Tera”, Zee said before walking away, leaving Tera with something to think about.
