INT. LISA'S BEDROOM - MORNING.

Lisa is doing homework, every time she makes a mistake she scrunches up the page and chucks it into the rubbish bin, behind her is a poster of her idol.

LISA

[Voice over]

My father left us when I was young, ever since then it's just been me and my mother, we aren't wealthy, but we get by. I owe it to myself to make her proud of me; I try my best in everything I do. I tend to struggle in my school work, but what I lack in academics, I make up for on the soccer field, it's been around about a month now since I was announced team captain at my local schools team, and although it’s only a school team, I know my Mother is proud of me. But I can do better, my ultimate dream in life is to be like Jessie Jenson she's my idol, she was poor just like me when she was my age and still made it onto a national team, I bet her mother is proud of her.

LISA's MOTHER

[sticks her head in the door]

hey Lees, it's time to start heading over to practise don't you think? I won't be here when you get back, have fun, i love you.

LISA

see you tomorrow then.

EXT. FOOTBALL FIELD - AFTERNOON

Team is doing warm ups, when they get distracted by Coach being on the phone, Lisa takes charge of practise.

COACH BENNET

[on the phone] hi, Alex, yeah thanks for getting back to me after such short notice, yeah that's right, I think I have exactly what you're looking for, she's one of the best I've seen on a school team without any formal training, from what I hear, not academic. I'd love for you to come and see her play. Yeah that would be perfect see you then

.

Coach walks back to where the girls are training and casually admires Lisa in her leadership.

Kitty and Lisa are having a water break together.

VICTORIA

so, what do you think that was about? Coach being on the phone and all, do you think someone important is going to watch us play? i really hope so. this could be our big break Lisa, this time next year we could be playing for an actual team

LISA

I'm sure, that's not what she was on the phone about, it was probably just something personal, you really do get worked up easily don't you.

VICTORIA

but what if it isn't? what if I'm right? don't you ever dream of what it would be like? I've seen the posters on your wall, admit it you want it, the big break i bet you'd do anything to play in an actual stadium.

LISA

one thing that I've learnt in life, is don't get your hopes up, unlike you I've had lots of experience with disappointment.

The pair race back to where the team is sitting, facing Coach who is standing in front of them all.

COACH

Girls I have some news, and it affects all of you.

I've been in contact with a friend of mine, we went to school together, she's (or he's)the coach for [insert team name here] she's looking for some fresh new talent, and I recommended you lot, whether or not that was a wise decision is yet to be determined, it's up to you to make me proud. I'm counting on you.

The girls all murmur with excitement.

GIRL 1

[to girl 2] I knew I was good enough, Coach as finally come to her senses, and seen how great I am

GIRL 2

How do you know it isn't me she was recommending? I'm just as good as you if not better.

GIRL 1

are you joking?

GIRL 3

You two are obviously delusional, she was talking about me

Lisa sits back and watches her team mates argue about who's a better player.

Coach blows the whistle and screen fades into the next scene.

INT. VICTORIA’S HOUSE -AFTERNOON

Victoria enters her living room area throws her bag onto the floor and sits down on the coach, with a can of pepsi. Victoria's Mother walks in wearing high heels, and expensive clothes. Notices Victoria drinking the unhealthy substance.

VICTORIA’S MOTHER

Victoria! Get that devils drink away from those lips! Are you trying to poison your body?

VICTORIA

Relax mum it’s just one can.

VICTORIA’S MOTHER

Look at yourself after all I've done for you? All those nutritionist appointments, your special diets, and not to mention what these death in a can does for your skin! Look at me how stressed I am!

VICTORIA

Take a chill pill

VITORIA’S MOTHER

I know why this is happening, you've been spending too much time with that Lisa girl haven't you, sure she's nice enough dear, but nice isn't going to get you anywhere, do you think I bothered with those types of people when I was your age? Do you?

VICTORIA

No.

VICTORIA’S MOTHER

One day you are going to have to realise, that in order to succeed you have to do whatever it takes to get to the top. Now go and wash up, I don't want any more of your sweaty gear clogging up my clean fresh air. Henrietta cleaned it today.

Victoria leaves to have a shower.

INT. LISA'S HOUSE - AFTERNOON

Lisa picks up a note left on the kitchen bench it reads: dinner is in fridge, heat up in microwave, love mum xx
Lisa heats up her dinner, and while waiting for the microwave to be done she plays around with the soccer ball.

Screen fades to black.

EXT. FOOTBALL FIELD " EARLY MORNING

Lisa is training on the football field before school by herself, Coach arrives at school early and to her surprise notices Lisa, training hard and by herself.

COACH

[voice over] Lisa has always been an important part of my team, that’s why i promoted her to captain this year, it’s always been to my understanding, that she hasn’t been receiving the best grades in school, but school rules state that all athletes on any sporting teams must pass all subjects, and no one has come to me about kicking her off the team, watching her now at this time of day by herself, i can see dedication, determination and commitment, I really do believe that she tries her best in her sport as well as her school work, to be honest she reminds me of Jessie Jenson.

INT. CLASSROOM " MORNING

School bell rings, Victoria and Lisa are sitting together in class when they get there marks back from an assessment. Camera shows, Lisa receiving a C+ and Victoria receiving an A-. Victoria looks miserable, Lisa looks overjoyed.

LISA

[Happy tone of voice] What did you get?

VICTORIA

Just don’t ask.

LISA

Aw come on, I got a C+ what did you get?

VICTORIA

The worst possible mark ever!

LISA

You got an F?

VICTORIA

No! Might as well have though

LISA

Just tell me Vic!

VICTORIA

[groans] I got an A-

LISA

An A? Minus?

VICTORIA

I know! My mum is going to kill me

LISA

That is an excellent mark Vicky, what are you complaining about? I’d give anything to be able to have an A- on anything.

VICTORIA

That’s because you’re not....

[Victoria stops before she hurts Lisa]

LISA

Not what? Look just because you look down upon yourself doesn’t mean you have to look down on me, I’m supposed to be your best friend. Maybe you should rethink as to what’s more important to you.

Lisa stands up and changes seats, leaving Victoria alone, Victoria looks upset. Lisa looks disappointed.

EXT. FOOTBALL FIELD " AFTERNOON

The girls are doing drills; Victoria is partnered up with one of the other girls. Lisa watches them. Victoria gets angry at the girl for giving her a lousy pass of the ball. Victoria notices Lisa staring at her and she gives her a menacing look. When it is drink break, Coach blows the whistle, Victoria shoves Lisa with her shoulder as she walks past.

COACH

Lisa, wait up for a sec.

LISA

Yeah coach what is it?

COACH

What is going on with you and Vic? Don’t tell me it’s nothing I saw all of that right there and it’s definitely something.

LISA

Let’s just say we have had a bit of a disagreement.

COACH

Whatever it is, you two are going to have to set it aside when you are at MY practises, especially with Alex coming here very soon. I expected more from my star athlete.

LISA

I’m sorry.

COACH

I know you are, that’s the kind of person you are, you admit your mistakes, that’s a great quality to have Lisa.

The team starts another drill, and camera focuses on Victoria for the entire time.

VICTORIA

[Voice over] do you think that i had time for people like that when i was your age Victoria? Guess what Mum, I’m not you, I like having Nice friends, i like soccer, i like having time to relax, i miss Lisa, and because of you, I don’t even have the one thing in my life that meant the most to me. If i impress the Scout then maybe I will be able to prove to you that I’m good enough at something that isn’t reading and writing, sport isn’t just a phase i am going through, and some days i just really need junk food. I’m so sorry Lisa, will you ever forgive me?

EXT. CARPARK " AFTERNOON

Victoria’s mother notices a poor looking woman (Lisa’s mum) and opens her purse and pulls out a five dollar not, tries to give it to the woman.

LISA’S MOTHER

I’m not homeless.

VICTORIA’S MOTHER

You can’t really blame me for my mistake now can you

LISA’S MOTHER

I find it very offensive, that just because my clothes aren’t $200 on sale, that I don’t have a home, I do have a house a very cosy one, and me and my daughter are very happy in it thank-you very much

VICTORIA’S MOTHER

How many bedrooms’ is cosy?

LISA’S MOTHER

Never you mind.

Lisa walks over to her Mother, but Victoria’s Mother thinks she is walking to her.

VICTORIA’S MOTHER

Lisa, so nice to see you It has been a very long time since you’ve come to visit Victoria.

LISA

Yes it has, hope you have been doing well Mrs..

Victoria’s mother interrupts Lisa

VICTORIA’S MOTHER

Call me Blair honey.

LISA’S MOTHER

Lisa, you ready to go home? Got all your gear?

LISA

Yep let’s go, bye Blair.

Victoria’s mother only just notices that it was Lisa’s mother she had been rude to.

Victoria stays behind to talk to Coach.

VICTORIA

So do I even have a chance?

COACH

Vic, you know you are very talented, and I have faith in you and in all my players.

VICTORIA

But Lisa is the special one isn’t she, I can see it in your eyes, and I’ve seen her play, Alex is coming for her

COACH

She is the one I recommended yes, but that doesn’t mean Alex won’t look at any of the rest of the team, Vic you just gotta have faith in yourself, I believe in you. Maybe you should too.

VICTORIA

Thanks Coach.

Victoria leaves

INT. VICTORIA’S HOUSE " MORNING.

Victoria walks into the kitchen where her mother is.

VICTORIA’S MOTHER

There you ae Victoria, what are you wearing that old thing for? I’ve made appointments with Gigi, to get our nails done, and look at how you repay me dressing like a boy.

VICTORIA

I can’t go and get my nails done mum! It’s the game, you promised you’d drive me today, and now I’m going to be late because I’ll have to walk!

VICTORIA’s MUM

A game? Today? There will be other games, surely it won’t matter if you miss this one.

VICTORIA

No! It’s not just some game Mum Alex the coach for the State’s Female team will be there looking for new talent for next year’s team, this could be my ticket to something more than the silly school team, I could be a star athlete Mum.

VICTORIA’S MOTHER

Leave athletics for the boys Victoria, how many times have we talked about this, you’re going to grow out of this phase soon, and it isn’t soon enough!

VICTORIA

What If I don’t mum, do you really want to be the one who ruined my chances? Because if you take that away from me I will never forgive you.

Victoria storms out of the house.

INT. LISA’S HOUSE

Lisa finishes getting ready her mum comes and sits next to her on the couch while she packs her bags.

LISA’S MOTHER

You know how proud I am of you Lees, I know you can do it. Today when I’m not there, know that I will be thinking about you and you’ll be in my heart. I would be there if i could you know i would! I’m so sorry that I have to work.

LISA

Mum, it’s fine, I know how proud you are of me, and I’ll be playing for you!

LISA’S MOTHER

What’s the time? I think I’d better get going, I’ll see you tonight, when you’re a star

LISA

Muuuuuuuum! We don’t know that I’m going to be good enough yet.

LISA’S MOTHER

Of course you’re good enough! And even if she doesn’t pick you it’s her loss you’ll always be my star player.

LISA

Thanks mum, I’ll see you tonight yeah?

LISA’S MOTHER

Tonight

Her mother gives her a big hug before leaving.

Lisa packs up her bag and leaves for the game.

EXT. FOOTBALL FIELD - AFTERNOON

Victoria’s Mum felt bad about her daughter storming out so she goes to the game, Victoria doesn’t notice this.

Blair notices her daughter’s skills and is impressed.

VICTORIA’S MOTHER

[voice over]I see myself in here, I’ve never seen that before, until she stormed out on me, I wish I had done the same to my own mother. Watching her now i see determination, all that anger probably aimed at me, and I see talent. My Daughter has talent in a sweaty boys sport. How could this happen to me? I am proud of her sure, but why oh why did it have to be soccer? I despise soccer. But she looks so happy, surrounded by all her friends, this is her scene, maybe i have been pushing my scene onto her a little bit. When I first met her father he was a mad soccer player himself, probably could of gone national, but he left the game to be with me. He pushed her into soccer, but she actually liked it, maybe I am jealous or maybe I just want a daughter who acts like a daughter. Oh Victoria I’m sorry, my baby girl I should have listened. I try my hardest to be a good mother, but it’s hard, my own wasn’t a very good role model for me. I’ve never had a proper mother figure to teach me how to do it right. I look at Victoria now and I realise I’m no better than my own mother.

Victoria walks up to Lisa

VICTORIA

Lisa, I am so, so sorry I should never have treated you that way, you’re right that was a really great mark, and so was yours you worked so hard on it and I’m so proud of you.

LISA

Thanks Vic

VICTORIA

I’ll let you have some time to think my apology over, good luck with the game

LISA

Vic, no I don’t need to think it over. You hurt me, but I forgive you, I already forgave you, your my best friend how could I not?

The two hug and walk over to the team.

The game starts.

Show clips of feet kicking the ball.

Lisa’s mother arrives, unexpectedly, and sits down to watch the game.

LISA’S MOTHER

[voice over] I am so proud of my daughter, I wish I had more to give to her, I wish i could have given her the world, but we did make it through alot, which has probably made us closer, watching her here almost brings tears to my eyes, she has so much passion and strength in her ability, I admire Lisa so much, she’s taught me alot more than she realises. She’s struggles with something, she’ll never give up. I wish i had the will power to do that when I was her age. I know she just wants to make me proud of her, but really she doesn’t have to try, I am always proud of her, my girl is so much more than I ever was. She proved that she didn’t need a father to make her a better person, she proved that she can improve in her studies, she proved that she can make captain. Today I just know she’s going to prove to everyone that she has what it takes to go far in life.

COACH

[voice over] Alex just before said to me, that she can see why i picked Lisa as captain. She said it with such confidence, like she could see something in her before actually seeing her play, and now they’re actually playing I notice the delight in her face, I saw the way she was looking at Lisa, and It made me happy, that girl deserves all the praise she can get, she has talent seeping out of her pores, everyone around her can see it. I think no one except maybe her own mother is as proud of her as I am.

More videos of feet, kicking, then a glimpse of Lisa, then Victoria, then the face of Coach, then Lisa’s Mother, then Blair, and back to Lisa.

Lisa kicks the winning goal, and everybody hugs her.

Her Mother hugs her,

Coach hugs her.

Victoria hugs her.

LISA’S MOTHER

I’m so glad they let me off from work early!

LISA

You made it! I can’t believe you actually made it.

LISA’S MOTHER

I knew you would make me proud

LISA

Victoria notices her mother is there.

Blair walks over to her daughter.

VICTORIA’S MOTHER

I was here the whole time, you have talent Victoria, I just never took the time to notice it before.

VICTORIA

Thank you for coming Mum, It means alot.

VICTORIA’S MOTHER

I’m sorry for pulling you away from this, i just didn’t want my only daughter ending up like the son i never had.

VICTORIA

I know you took the time to come and see me mum, but will you excuse me for a moment?

VICTORIA

Sure I’ll see you soon.

Victoria runs over to Lisa and hugs her again

VICTORIA

You were fantastic! She’s going to pick you for sure!

LISA

Oh i hope so, thankyou  Vic for everything, you are the best friend a girl could have.

VICTORIA

Here comes Coach!

The girls are holding hands to help Lisa out with her nerves.

COACH

Lisa, there’s someone Alex would like you to meet.

Screen turns to Victoria whose jaw drops

VICTORIA

No way!

COACH

Lisa, I’d like you to meet Jessie Jenson.

Lisa shakes Jessie’s hand.

Screen fades to black.

Credits roll.

INT. LISA’S HOUSE " AFTERNOON

Lisa and Victoria are sitting on the couch talking and laughing and having a great time.

LISA

And When I get back, We are going to do everything! Movies, beach, shopping, and it will be like I never left

VICTORIA

I’m going to miss you Lisa

LISA

I’ll miss you too.

VICTORIA

We should make a pact, a pinkie swear

LISA

Best friends forever?

Victoria and Lisa lock pinkies and swear on their everlasting friendship.

The scene ends with the two girls laughing and talking again.

This was hilarious! The way Victoria replied to her mother made me laugh. I could totally hear the " yeah mom, whatever" in the undertone of her voice. It really does suck how much some parents try to force their children to become something they're not. I felt sad for Victoria in that aspect. This was really good, the characters were really well developed and this flowed nicely. This seems like a fun play to watch!

I don't know much about screenplays, so I shouldn't be the one judging, but it looks pretty good to me! Oh, and you can use Microsoft Word to quickly find and replace Kitty with Victoria (Ctrl+F).

This is a very first screen play I have ever read, and I love it :D I thought it was really funny, it certainly made me laugh :3

I was going to write a constitutive-harsh-destructive review, then I remembered how my professors used to criticise every-single-word I wrote; granted, it builds character, but it may also destroy the young, enthusiastic, and fragile spirit of a writer. So....
Apart from a few typos' and grammar issues(do not worry, we all make them and I just made one--parallelism) there is nothing wrong with the story. In terms of story structure; it progressed to the climax at the right moment, the general premise was introduced early, and the characters had enough background info...and that is fine. I would recommend adding a bit more to the plot(do not complicate it) just add a glitch or a twist, as to not dull the reader.

Cheers and best of luck.

First time I have reviewed a play! Loved the voice over at the beginning. The way you headline places and occurences works well. The girls all murmur with excitement was nicely done and worked great in italics. The three girls debating who is best is comical. You portrayed the health conscious emotionally black mailing mum excellently. Screen fades to black...felt like a real play, when i read that. It seems unfair that a sports person has to pass all other subjects! Lisa seems the nicer and wiser character up to now, but I feel sorry for Victoria's perfectionism, and where her ideas have come from. Can somebody please shut Victorias mum up! I am not sure how realistic the conversation between the two mothers is. You have created a real upstairs/downstairs class drama here. Glad Blair is able to change. I like the way you let us know Lisa had got the job, by fast forwarding to conversation on the couch. All this with underlying moral to the story thrown in. Who could ask for more. My grandaughter makes me do pinky promises, so I ended this on a smile. Thankyou. Loved it.
