What Is Poetry?

You say it like

I just execute the words that sit there prewritten.

But no.

Words float in my head,

And I am the one to connect the dots.

Forming the constellations of which I call my writing.

Poetry

Is not rhyming words strung together to form something

Pointless.

It is not something symbolic packed with abstract metaphors,

To try to give the illusion of depth.

Poetry

Is emotion.

 

Poetry is the thoughts in our minds that if not let out

We cannot function.

It is the melody,

Constantly running through our brains.

It is the drug that heals.

It is the wrong that is right.

It is the paradox which is society.

Is the blood rushing in our veins,

Proving us to be living.

It is the ground beneath our feet,

The sun setting on the shoreline,

The boy with an acoustic on his lap,

Writing lyrics.

The quiet girl sitting in the corner,

Her basic needs, a journal and pen.

Poetry…

Is the core of life,

The universal language of feeling.

Poetry…

Is the ability to convey not the things that we are able to say,

But the things we are unable to say.

Poetry…

Is beauty in words.

I thought this was beautiful. It really takes the concept of poetry to a high level of soulful emotion and the inner resonance. Your weave of words is fantasticly placed, so that every piece of vision and power is achieved.

Yet... I will say that for some the rhyme and the metaphors are what make poetry solid and more honest. While a poems depth and it's ability to breed a question, not of what the poet may have meant, but what does it mean to me. Seeing that every reader that gazes upon the lines of ink will define the piece a different way. That for me is poetic bliss. =)
