A Watermelon Day

A Watermelon Day

A Poem by Jacqueline Murray

"
Today was a watermelon day,
and the air was as soft and as crisp as a
giant peach not yet bruised and I was
James.

Today was a watermelon day,
because the shell was tougher to sink my teeth into than was the
flesh.

I always loved a good watermelon, I
say from within my urn;
in my car-seat in the way, way back I'd
dreamt too often of crunching every watermelon beneath my untied sneaker and
chomping down the shell with triangular teeth.

And today I drive myself to the market and watch---
wistfully---
as the price of watermelons rises.

It is a pretty penny I do not have to my name.

Yesterday was a watermelon day and I spat on the ground.

Seems life has a price of "admission" - and take that word in ALL senses of its meaning.

We've sooo much and yet so little to have anymore.
