Garden Variety Sociopaths, Sadists, and Inheritors

A Poem by Jacqueline Murray

"
how long after a body dies before it begins
to Stink?
that is,
how do the scavenger birds know when the time has come to
flock, to circle,
and furthermore to Feast?
perhaps "G"od draws red hearts around them in ink
only visible to the vultures and their Allies.

but who is the ally of the deer Carcass? "G"od
thinks it to be the predators who carry the meat away
in their throats but maybe the "d"eer don't want
the "C"arnivores to benefit from their Misfortune.

"G"od doesn't think of things like that but Jesus
maybe would Have.

how long after the light is drained from the eyes before
the pupil truly turns to Black? a black so thin that
lions see right through it to the freezer-burned Brain.

if lions are the kings of the jungle, why is it
the "m"eek who shall inherit the Earth? (i think
that's just a little white lie to keep the "m"eek from
fleeing to Pluto.)

the food chain is the focal point around which
the circle of life Revolves--

maybe i want out of the circle of L(?)ife.
