And I Could See My Breath

And I Could See My Breath

A Poem by Jacob Carlos Stamper

All that ever came from those shadows that the trees did catch
was just another lonely word
that got lost
in the loneliness of the night.
Like lights do,
like people do,
like sounds, and words, and buildings do.
Like all the feet of every carpeted floor,
in every world,
being lifted up and into bed.
That is how the moon sunk itself
down
onto our dinner plates
tonight.
