Backwards

Everything is backwards 

Everything is a disaster

The sky is falling faster

Kids run with no master

Roll off the tongue with laughter

The goal we're shooting after

Unfolds. So cold. This cancer

spreading through the nation

bred and swelling devestation

Suffering with deprivation

Running out of medication

Interfering with my meditation

They keep appearing. 

The struggles that we're facing

The darkness I'm fearing

The foundations there replacing

Don't see a clearing. They keep smearing

All I'm hearing is more trouble we're embracing

Everything is backwards

We are being attacked here

These are evident facts here

The issues are getting racked here

We don't seem to be mad here

The system has crashed here

I have had all i have had here

I haven't learned how to critique spoken word- like poems but I do find the fourth stanza a strength and its repetition of "here" interesting. Not only does it point out all these facts and events--look here!--, it also presents them as sharing the same space. It's a good artistic way of saying "optimism, pessimism, I don't care. Don't ignore what's here, see the big picture, that's what's real".

Sometimes when something is criticized, the commentator is accused of being destructive or pessimistic, at the expense of facts. Optimism, unity, or contentment for their own sake becomes backward.
