Chapter 1: The Beginnings

Meet Jack, his role is to be a background character in all the worlds he visit. Jack doesn't know who to properly be one.

            Endings are a peaceful time, especially after a long day of adventure. The heroes were victorious, the kingdom was saved, the whole world was happy, good for them. Hidden in the forest far from the kingdom, I saw the whole story from the beginning, it was sad at first then turned out good, so I guess it’s a happy ending? I’m just glad nothing went wrong, I can approve of this story being good to headquarters. Taking out a big stretch, I pull a silver house key from my pocket and used it in the empty air, the key reacted and a door appeared,  I took one last look around knowing I’ll probably not see it again, with that, I opened the door and closed it behind, the door disappeared without a trace, leaving that world behind.

            The sun greeted me to a valley filled with doors of what’s know as the books route. Many stories that are made for books can be found here; light novels, novels, magazines, whatever can be written down can be found here. There are countless doors that lead to many worlds like the one I came off from. I followed a dirt-path towards the train leading to the Main Square. After filling out what I need to report on my phone, looking out the window was a beautiful sunset falling to the horizon, giving off a shiny look to the land, I like the books section because of this view, there are some that can compete but this one is the best.

            Books are one of 4 sections that we guard in the fictional world; there’s Books, Television, Internet and Video-Games. For the longest time there was only one section here, but recently we had three new sections built here to cover those stories to draw a line between fiction from reality. You could say we are The Watchers like in the Marvel Universe but were more that. Me and everyone else here are background characters. “Next Stop, Main Square”, the announcer said on the train. Getting off the train, it’s a pretty normal day, people are enjoying themselves, shops and restaurants everywhere and the commute is pretty good.

            Main Square is a huge area where all people end up going, it connects the paths of the 4 sections and leads a 5 path for headquarters. I stopped by the ice cream shop for a cone, man I missed this, in the world I observed, ice cream didn’t exist there, so I didn’t have this for a long time. “Hey Jack!”  I looked up to see a man with black hair and eyes, it’s my supervisor, Tom. He pulled up a chair across me and told me “How was your assignment, did everything go well?” I gave a low smile “Good, everything went well, and I already sent my report to headquarters.” Tom sighed in relief, “That’s good to hear, I already have your next mission.” Tom pulled out an envelope from his back pocket and handed it to me. “The door to the world will open at 9:00 am, it will be under light novels in the Books section, don’t be late.” I put the envelope in my pocket, “Of course, I will not disappoint.” Tom gave a warm smile, “Good, now if you excuse me, I need to get back to my work, if you have any problems contact me okay?” Finishing off my ice cream, I gave the ok and he left back for headquarters.

            I arrived back to my place, its nothing special, just have the necessary needs; a bed, kitchen and a living room. Walking to my bedroom I see that the clock says 4:36 pm. I guess I’ll go to sleep, kind of think of it, when was the last time I slept? The ending part of the last assignment took many days to reach because so much was happening at once. Maybe a good three days? Seem like a long time, but its hard work, keeping up with the main character through all their shenanigans, it’s even worse when they travel al lot, I got to keep up. Hopefully the next assignment is more laid back.

            This morning is heavier than usual, I feel charged, but I don’t want to get off bed. I can feel how lonely this room is. Where I am right now, there is no sun, just an empty pocket of space, outside of time. Its pretty much dark all the time, and with the stories I’ve watched it get super depressing. Here I am getting jealous of the main character’s relations, all their friends, family, the people they care about are always with them. I finally decided to look up at the clock and read the time 7:26 am. Well time to do my job, it’s the only thing I’m good at.

            After getting my clothes on, I pulled out the letter and opened it up, it was just one single piece of paper, but it told me all I need. The main character’s name: Emily Flores: A high school student of Alpha High School and the title of the story is called To Where We Are. No face can be shown, not surprising since this is a new release of a light novel. I threw the paper in the trash and grabbed a bite to eat in the kitchen. While I was eating a muffin, I look at myself in the mirror to make sure everything was set; my brown hair is fine, blue eyes are clear, and my red jacket is shown. I grabbed my three items, a phone, a wallet, and a silver house key. I used the key on the door that leads to a wall, the door lights up and opened, I put the key back in my pocket and left back to Main Square.

            The door disappeared into thin air as soon as I closed it. Many other people are doing the same thing. I headed back to the books section, on the side there is a board showing titles that are releasing or soon to be released. I looked for the title “Light novel “To Where We Are” Door number 237.” I got on the train and arrived at Light Novel. A robot went up to eye level and I said the door number. The robot confirms and teleported me to the door. The time is 8;59 am. The mission was about to start, and I am nervous, I don’t know what to expect but I must be prepared for anything. The door clicks, and it was time for me to go, with my key, the door opens, and I stepped forward, closing it behind me.

            I arrived at a rooftop of a tall building. The wind was high up here, but it was relaxing under the moon. A view before me was a city with a lot of lights below me. Seem I’m on top of the tallest building here. I looked at my phone for the time; 1:10 am. I look at what’s in front me, determined to see this one finished to the end as well, another promising adventure or something like that.
