Driven

Driven

A Poem by Jacob Nimble

A great man is driven.

I wonder what drives me?

Could it be my pride?

A desire to be my best despite everything that fights me?

More likely my hubris,

the thought I am best with no proof to reconcile it.

Could it be defensiveness?

the need to be safe, and keep safe from all harm?

More likely cowardice,

the fear of dangers real and imagined.

My creativity?

A need to make something no other could?

but I am shallow and pedantic, pointless and derivative.

What drives me on?

My passion?

more likely my hunger.

Why do I continue?

For me?

More likely for my friends.

For the people who depend on me, and make me great.

More likely for those who I save,

for every fragment of them I serve,

I grow, I heal, I live.

I don’t need to crash in like a meteorite,

changing the face of the world.

I shall be like water.

and erode that which stops me with time.
