Standing in the DarkA Poem by Jacob NimbleStanding in the dark standing in the dark standing in the dark and the light touches my eyes. It burns inside my mind, digging deeper, cutting in to bite my soul look at me I’m on a roll ain’t nowhere that I can go. Just lost my mind. yeah, that’s all it’s not my shame it’s not my pain my fury waits outside my mind it’s not my life it’s not my love it’s not my tombstone that I hide! It’s my true face! Behind a mask! Lost for people who don’t ask why, oh why, should I hide my eyes? Why? Oh why should I tell these lies? walking deeper into shade I find things in light unmade broken hearts and tearful eyes the damned and blessed one softly sighs. Why? Oh why, must I cry? Who did I offend so? When, oh when would I have known? This hurtful groaning in my bone. So I ride into my shadowed soul hiding what it is I used to know holding on and holding back my cries the whip may strike I’ll never call remaining stoic through it all accursed whim I turn and fall fall into your deep blue eyes I hope that you can sympathize my balance fails oft. and so I rise aloft right into your deep blue eyes. Tell me have you fallen too? Into eyes both rich and blue? Do you think the eyes can say what’s true? or do you think they lie to you? Shot by darkness. Shot by drink. Does it matter what I think? Shot by candles. Shot by light. Does it change what’s wrong and right? Shot by whiskey. Shot by gin. I don’t know where to begin Shot by lightning. Shot by sight. Where will you spend this dreadful night? As with all the nights before my eyes rest on my bedroom door it’s loneliness that I abhor locked behind my bedroom door.© 2016 Jacob Nimble |
