She Was Dreaming (In The Rain)

She Was Dreaming (In The Rain)

A Poem by Jack Necron (Aubrey Jack Peaslee)
"

Domestic abuse and the shackles it creates.

"

The skies clouded and grayed
Blotting out the sun with ease
People flee indoors like a great escapade
Treating umbrellas and coats as necessities
She stands alone in expected exile
Embracing the storm with a smile.

They fall in a hasty swarm
Escape comes in the form
Of crystalline beauty from the sky
Teardrops from Mother Earth’s eye
Thoughts wash away from her mind
Unlike the others, she won’t go inside
There’s a reason why she refuses to refrain
Right now, she’s dreaming in the rain.

The humming of cars and trucks
The banging of construction havoc
The jingles of cell phones
The technological world shrinks into undertones
Congested streets become devoid of sound
Everything fades to the background.

Every single drop against her skin
Was the washing away of a hateful memory
Spraying about like miniature jewelry
Every splash upon the ground
Signaled the sorrow was dying
And the darkness within was fading.

Back home a fist would induce a scream
Nothing was good enough for him it seemed
She wishes she could just leave
But this is a welcomed reprieve
Before the sadness returns again
For now, relinquished are those chains
Because she is dreaming in the rain.

Visions of a home far away from here
And of a family vividly appear
Better days from yesteryear
And long forgotten memories reappear
Archaic images have persevered
Everything now becomes clear.

This hatred in her life can’t remain
No longer a bird caged from it’s domain
Never again will she need an excuse
For where she got that bruise
No more saying “sorry” before she asks questions
Or covering his anger with “it happens”
A heart’s words should never be constrained
Feeling trapped, here forever they may remain.

The rain begins to subside
And everyone starts to head outside
For some fleeting moments she was alone
Pondering her wishes and the unknown
Sorrowed but fine with it’s passing
In her moment of clarity a vision of what’s missing
She knows she must overcome her fears
Or her destiny will be unending tears.

Today her efforts will not be in vain
And tomorrow will not be the same
But should she ever need to again
You can find her dreaming in the rain.

I would pray she had the good sense to not return to the abuser. Not enough women call the police to report the abuse.Valentine

Exquisite. You've captured the freedom of the healing rain washing over and cleansing the spirit. "She knows she must overcome her fears
Or her destiny will be unending tears." All too true and real for many abuse victims reawakening. Love this piece.
