Heart of Black

Heart of Black

A Poem by Jack Necron (Aubrey Jack Peaslee)

Many memories lost to the hours
In this apartment that’s still ours
Now in name and living space only
The hearts within it are empty
It’s the story of a love gone bad
Giving up on what we once had.

The truth has come from push and shove
I’m a shadow and a thought of what she loved
Standing here pleading my case
In her eyes I've fallen from grace
The man in the mirror isn’t what she wanted
I’m not everything she needed.

Beyond that door is endless warfare
A knife could cut the tension in the air
Despite saying things neither of us really mean
Can’t prevent the spark igniting the gasoline
My soul slowly burns into glass
Soon collapsing from all these cracks.

I try to laugh and keep a happy mood
When asked if I’m okay, I lie and say “I’m good”
Doubt I can keep this mask on long
Dying now that the light within is gone
Suffering from that very thing I lack
I need a heart transplant since mine’s grown black.

It’s a coin toss if you’ll want me today
Or hate me tomorrow
If we will find a way
Or perish like Juliet and Romeo
This relationship is on life support
It’s foundation continues to distort
No matter what I seem to do
It avoids any attempt at rescue
My purgatory is that every single day
I watch it once more fade away.

How did she go from being my everything
To both of us feeling nothing?
Day in and day out, it’s become a trend
I think it’d be easier if it’d end
Instead of walking home to the nightmare
Of a romance no longer there.

I know it’s not just one person
But both of us that let it come undone
The blue hues above withered to grey
Now there’s no stars within that sky
I miss how it all was back when
I’d give anything to have it like that again.
