Wing Dance ConversationA Story by SupertrampI'm currently working on a novel about two character (Knight and Samurai) who wander a wasteland in search of a Dragon. This is one of the conversations they have.Knight chewed his grass stalk whilst Samurai looked
on. You know bee’s don’t talk, said Samurai. Huh? Bee’s don’t talk. Ok. Silence as they both pondered this. Knight broke it. How do they know not to bump into each other? It’s the wings. The wings? Yeah. The wings tell them not to bump into each other?
Knight repeated. It’s vibrations. They talk through really fast
vibrations. But… It’s a dance. A wing dance, Samurai managed lamely. A wing dance? Wings. That dance. The sun was setting now, a radiant corona of yellows
and reds hovering at the line between land and sky. Knight stopped chewing. That’s beautiful, he said. Isn‘t it, we watch it every night but still get
captured by the- They just hover and talk about their day in
interpretive dance? Oh. I mean think about how we argue all the time and
scream and yell when if we could actually read each other we’d live such- What if you pull their wings off? Samurai interrupted. Both of them or one? One. They’d fly in circles wouldn’t they? They wouldn’t be able to talk anymore. Dance. Yes, dance anymore. The bee would just wander around asking the other
bee’s for help and they wouldn’t be able to understand him. I think they would cast him out. Knight shrugged non-committedly. Samurai became
reflective. We walk this place with life in every breath and use it
to make such a noise, I don’t think we really- They’re dying though, Knight said. What are? The bees. Oh. Samurai picked at a stalk but did not chew it.
That is upsetting, he said. © 2013 SupertrampAuthor's Note
