Dobermans are not Labs. Pretty simple I suspect.

In the beginning there was Only human male and Only human female and Skeezer and B-Boy looked up at them. The two boys were eight weeks old to the day and they stared into the faces of the only two beings in the universe that mattered and both tried to stay awake.

B-Boy blinked and got to his feet shaky. He stagger-walked over to Only human female and lay on her feet. He fell asleep and his tongue fell out of his mouth.

Skeezer watched B-Boy and then did the same to Only human male and fell asleep on the man’s feet.

“Ah,” Thomas asked his wife Alicia. “Didn’t the trainer and breeder tell us not to allow this?”

Alicia bent down and picked up B-Boy. She sat and put him in her lap and petted him soft and slowly. She eyed Thomas with a left eye brow arched look and he laughed. She put out her tongue and said, “Mine.”

Thomas laughed and followed suit and put Skeezer in his lap. He stroked the little puppy in his lap and he was happy.

Alicia smiled to Thomas and grinned as she said, “I love you.”

He looked up from the baby dog and met his wife’s eyes. He said, “I love you more.” He winked and said, “You would take the bigger one.”

“He choose me and we did good,” Alicia said as she locked eyes with her husband. He nodded to her and smiled as he petted the dog in his lap.

Alicia then said, “Besides, dogs know who is the most dominate.”

Thomas laughed and met her eyes. He then said, “Too bad they don’t know who makes more money.”

“Oh boo,” Alicia said and laughed.

B-Boy opened his eyes and looked at the two only things in the universe that mattered to him. He wiggled into the Only Human Female’s warm lap and fell back asleep.

The two Dobermans responded to the word come and ran into the feeding room. They stood and looked up at only human male with expectant eyes.                   “Sit,” Only human male said and they sat.

Only human male looked at them both. “Down,” he said.

Both Dobermans went to their bellies and looked up at only human male. “Stay,” Only human male said.

Only human female entered the room carrying a squiggling wormy looking thing and B-Boy glanced from the corners of his eyes at Skeezer. Skeezer ignored B-Boy and watched as Only human female sat down on the floor next to Only human male.

            “New toy?” B-Boy asked Skeezer.

Skeezer tilted his head. “No idea. Doesn’t smell like a toy?”

Only human male said, “Katie,” and pointed at the tiny thing that moved its’ legs. Both dogs inhaled.

“Smells like human pee,” B-Boy replied.

Only human female began to make tones and both dogs had no idea what she was meaning as she gestured about the house. Her arms flew about in expression with the tones.

            Skeezer watched her intently.

B-Boy said, “I am not sure I like this wormy monster thing.” He tuned out Only female much the same as he often tuned out Skeezer and his need to correct.

Skeezer nodded. “Katie thing,” he replied as he corrected B-Boy. Skeezer often corrected B-Boy. As far as Skeezer was concerned, B-Boy was a total idiot.     “Katie thing?”  B-Boy asked. “Katie monster I think. It wiggles too much. I don’t like wiggly things.”

“Did you watch at all as Only human male indicated? You never pay attention. Sheeshe.” Skeezer sighed and then said, “You only ever follow my lead and do as I do. You really should learn about them more.”                               “Why? I know what I know,” B-Boy said. “It’s easier to just follow what you do.”
Only human female set the adopted two year old baby named Katie on the floor. The human baby crawled over and patted B-Boy on the head. She then put his ear in her mouth. Only human male laughed and Only human female sat back with her arms crossed.

Kate thing sucked on B-Boy’s ear.

“Ah, Skeezer?”                              “What,” he replied.                                  “Katie monster thing likes me better than you.”                             “Screw you, B-Boy!” He looked at Katie monster siting with B-Boy’s ear in her mouth and he sighed.

Katie baby monster then reached over and poked Skeezer in the eye by accident as she tried to pet him.                                                                 Skeezer kept control of himself and did not growl.

B-Boy rolled over on his back with all his feet in the air and baby wormy Katie monster crawled on top of him.  She put her tongue into his mouth and B-Boy licked her face and he licked her tongue and laughed as the little monster giggled. His feet waggled in the air.

Alicia watched and said, “God that is gross.”

“It is funny,” Thomas said and he laughed as he watched their daughter with the two dogs.

Skeezer looked at B-Boy and the Katie monster and shook his head. “Please kill him creator,” Skeezer whispered to the great creator.

Thomas looked at Alicia sharp eyed quick and she turned to meet his green eyes. He was almost crying.

She looked at him and asked, “What? Are you ok?”

“We are parents.” He smiled to her and wiped his arm across his face.

She nodded, smiled and said, “We were already. We have a non-fur kid now is all. We were already parents.” She smiled as she met his eyes. “We have two sons and a daughter now is all.”

Thomas met her eyes and turned from them as he thought. He looked back at his wife and Alicia was smiling as Skeezer was trying to get Katie to pay attention to him and B-Boy kept moving away from him to keep Katie to himself.

Thomas frowned as he thought about the statement and realized that Alicia was correct. They had three children now. He smiled despite himself.

Alicia looked at Thomas and she smiled and she turned back to watch  Skeezer sticking his tongue into Katie’s ears to lick out her wax as B-Boy licked Katie’s few teeth to clean them of baby carrots and peas.

Katie just giggled and lay atop B-Boy feeling his warmth. She got sleepy as her brother guardians cleaned her and she giggled and laughed as only a two-year old could even as she yawned.

Skeezer sudden sniffed her diaper and Alicia got to her feet. She stood and said, “Ok, that is enough.”

Katie looked up at her forever mommy and said, “I poopey!”

Skeezer put his nose up deep into the Katie monster’s diaper and said to B-Boy, “She smells bad.” He shook his head and said, “I don’t think she knows she has to go outside to poop and pee.”

B-Boy looked at Skeezer. “We will teach her.”

Skeezer met his brother’s brown eyes and nodded and corrected, “You mean I will teach her.”

B-Boy nodded and licked Katie monster’s nose covering it with spittle.

Thomas laughed as Alicia reached down and picked Katie up.

Both dogs sat and looked up at Only Female human.

Alicia looked down at the two and she sighed. She said, “Good boys.”

Both Skeezer and B-Boy nodded and looked at Only Human male for guidance.

Thomas laughed and said, “Good boys.” He was almost out of breath from trying not to laugh.

Katie was three and she had both Skeezer and B-Boy sitting next to her and she slurred, “This is an A.” She was missing a tooth from a bad game of tether ball.

Skeezer nodded and B-Boy looked out the window.

“This is a one,” Katie said and Skeezer nodded and B-boy lay down staring at a squirrel he wanted to chase and deal with a terrible vengeance of bloody eaten death.

Katie hugged on Skeezer. She said slow and careful, “One and one make two.”

Skeezer nodded and licked Katie’s cheek two times.

B-Boy said from the ground “And two and three make five.”

“And if you do two and three, you get five, Skeezer. Do you understand, B-Boy?”

B-Boy nodded and sat up and licked Katie’s nose.

She laughed and rubbed her nose clean. Katie stared at B-Boy and she asked, “What do you get with two and seven?” She knew it was nine. Preschool was hard, but she was learning.

B-Boy licked her face nine times and left a lot of spit on her.

“That is just mean, B-Boy,” Skeezer said.

B-Boy looked at the sky outside the window. “I am tired of numbers, Skeezer. I will always protect her. You know this.”

Katie laughed and lay on Skeezer and hugged B-Boy. “You are both so smart.”

Katie Monster wiggled all over the two dogs and they lay on their backs as she smothered them.

Katie monster said, “I love you so mush.” and she kissed both Skeezer and B-Boy.

B-Boy said as Katie monster accidentally put a finger into his eye, “I am so bored with ‘the my baby can read stuff’. I know it already. I love Katie monster, but must she constantly repeat it?” He sighed and said, “And nine and nine is I don’t know yet. Gosh.”

Skeezer looked at B-Boy and sighed. “She is learning. They are not as smart as we are B-Boy. This is why they need us to protect them. Humans need constant training.”

B-Boy thought on that and said after a pause, “You are the wise one, brother.” He lay on his side as he was hugged by Katie monster.

Katie monster was turning four and B-Boy and Skeezer had no idea why the Only humans were so happy.

The sat in the feeding room and watched as the Only humans put paper around what were obviously toys.

            B-Boy said, “Cool, new toys!”

“I don’t think those toys are for us, B-Boy,” Skeezer said.

“How do you know,” B-Boy asked?

Skeezer looked at B-Boy and asked, “Have they ever put paper on one of our toys?”

“There is a first time for everything,” B-Boy said.

“You’re an idiot, B-Boy,” Skeezer replied.

The phone rang and Only Male answered it. “Hello,” he said. He nodded and said, “Yes, three o’clock is fine.”

He listened for a moment and then said, “That would be great. We’ll see you then.”

The doorbell rang and both dogs turned and walked toward the front door. They both sat exactly five feet from the door of the den and stared intent and silent.

Thomas stood and said, “That’s probably Patricia.”

“Stall for ten seconds. I am almost done with the last of them.”

“Ok,” he said and put his wallet on the table; he exited the kitchen and walked past the boys to open the door.

B-Boy and Skeezer looked past Only Male at Katie monster in barely suspicious female human arms. Katie monster smiled and said, “Daddy.”

Thomas smiled and tickled her tummy as he asked, “What do we owe you?”

“Forty this time, Thom,” Patricia said and she added, “She had a great time at the park.”

Thomas did not like being called Thom, but Patricia was the best baby sitter they had been able to find in months so he did not correct her. He reached to his back pocket pretending to not know his wallet was gone. “I’ll be right back. Hold on.”

            Thomas entered the kitchen. “Done?”

Alicia nodded. Thomas picked up his wallet. He looked at Alicia and whispered, “She called me Thom again.”

Alicia arched her left brow and stared at him as she crossed the room to put the presents in the pantry. She said, “So you left her alone with the boys on purpose didn’t you.”

            Thomas nodded and grinned evil.

Patricia watched as both dogs stared at her and Katie.

“I think we should take her out now,” B-Boy said, “precautionary measure.”  He stood and looked up at the barely suspicious female human. B-Boy considered showing his teeth or just attacking.

Skeezer looked at B-Boy and he thought about it. “I’m not sure,” Skeezer said and tilted his head. “She is only barely suspicious.”

B-Boy sat and looked at Skeezer. “Well. Ok. Why?”

            “Only Katie monster likes her.”

B-Boy dipped his head. He said, “This is true.”

“And you don’t want to upset Katie monster.”

B-Boy shook his head. “I love Only Katie monster.” B-Boy stared at Skeezer.

Skeezer concluded, “We probably should not take her out early. But only watch and be ready, just in case.”

B-Boy nodded and he said, “You are very wise, Skeezer. You are like Daniel and the crows with the sheet dress that smelled of many bacons.”

“Many colors,” Skeezer replied and he shook his head and asked the creator, why have you created such an idiot. Skeezer looked at his larger brother and sighed. They had both been sleeping in Katie’s room at night for months as Alicia read Katie bed time stories from the bible.

Only Human female that mattered kissed them every night as they lay in Katie monster’s room after Katie monster fell asleep.

Patricia hated it when the McCarthy’s left her alone with the two dogs. They tended to hover and watch her constantly and they made her very nervous.

Katie monster smiled and said, “B-Boy.” She looked at Skeezer and said, “Skeezer.”

Both Dobermans smiled and looked at Only Katie monster in the barely suspicious female humans arms. She started to wiggle and Patricia set her down. She ran over to the two dogs and patted both their heads.

Katie smiled and kissed B-Boy and then she kissed Skeezer. She stood and stared at the two and met their eyes and they both turned and looked away from her in submission.

Katie monster said, “Mine.” And she turned and looked up at Patricia.

            Patricia nodded. She said, “Yours.”

Katie nodded and patted both of the dogs.

Thomas walked back into the room and handed Patricia forty dollars. He glanced at Katie with B-Boy and Skeezer and he smiled. “They love her,” Thomas said and he smiled. “Thanks Pat,” Thomas said as he turned and looked at the seventeen-year-old black goth girl.

Patricia lost her smiled and nodded as she replied, “Sure Thom.”

They met eyes and she smiled bright showing beautiful teeth as she said, “Till next time.”

Thomas nodded and shut the door after she turned away. He whispered, “I do not like her. Next time I’ll call her Patty. We need to find someone else.” He shook his head.

B-Boy turned and looked up at Only Human Male and growled very low and strode to the door.

            Thomas turned alarmed.

Skeezer looked at Only Human Male and B-Boy sitting before the door. He knew what B-Boy intended and he rose and sat next to Only Human Male.

Thomas looked down at Skeezer and asked, “He heard me?”

Skeezer rubbed against Only Human Male in the Universe and he made odd noises.

Thomas watched as Skeezer made strange sounds and the dog stared at his brother and pushed his nose out.

Katie stood next to Skeezer and said, “Skeezer says, B-Boy doesn’t like Pat Daddy ‘cause of you.” She looked up at Thomas and nodded her eyes serious.

Thomas looked at Katie and then back at Skeezer.

B-Boy sat staring at the doorknob and then he looked over at Only human male expectant. He looked back at the doorknob and pushed it with his nose.

Skeezer rubbed harder and looked up at Only Human Male. He toned, ‘B-Boy equal protect. No like, Pat!’

“B-Boy protect,” Katie said and she smiled.

He looked down at Katie and then Thomas looked at Skeezer and believed that Skeezer thought he was speaking. He knelt and said, “Come here B-Boy.”

B-Boy walked over and sat. He looked up at his Alpha and one of three reasons for living.

“No kill,” Thomas said and felt silly, but he repeated the command. “No kill.”

B-Boy whined and lay on his back in front of Only Human male.

Thomas rubbed his belly and then Katie monster jumped on B-Boy. “Mine daddy!”

Skeezer looked up into Only Male Human’s eyes and Thomas petted him soft. He said, “I love you Skeezer. I just don’t want B-Boy killing anyone.”

Skeezer said in tones, ‘He could you know. My brother is not that stable. I hope the creator takes him soon.’

Thomas listened as Skeezer moaned and wined and made a lot of bizarre noises.

Katie monster looked at Skeezer, “Boo, Skeezer. Not good!”

Alicia walked into the living room. “What happened?”

“B-Boy got upset at Patricia. She’s fine and I paid her.”

Katie said, “Mommy, Skeezer wants B-Boy to die!”

Skeezer turned his eyes and looked at the floor.

Katie Monster walked over to Skeezer and held his face. She kissed him and said, “Apologize.”

            Skeezer looked at B-Boy.

B-Boy dipped his head and said to Skeezer, “You don’t have too. We are brothers and brothers fight. It’s ok. We can talk later.”

Skeezer made silly fake noises and Katie monster hugged him and said, “I love you Skeezer.” She smiled and then said, “I am four, Skeezer. I am almost as old as you.”

Skeezer smiled and licked Katie monster’s face four times and smiled again as she giggled.

Both Thomas and Alicia watched the number of licks and then met eyes as they stared at each other.

Thomas said low voiced, “My Doberman can read?”

Alicia laughed and started to turn away.

The doorbell rang and both brothers turned and came to their feet. Only female opened the door and human kids holding presents began to stream into the house.

Katie jumped up and down and hugged them all.

Alicia put a birthday hat on B-Boy and then on Skeezer and she said, “You guys look awesome.” She took a photo with her phone and smiled.

She knelt before the two dogs and hugged them both. She said, “Katie loves you two.” She met the boys’ eyes and said, “I love you both as well. You are my sons by a different mother.”

A tear formed in Only Female that matters’ eyes and B-Boy tilted his head as he grinned and licked Alicia’s hand. Alicia leaned forward and met B-Boy’s eyes. She said, “You will always protect, Katie, won’t you?”

B-Boy met her eyes and nodded as humans do.

Alicia looked at Skeezer. “You too?”

Skeezer went to his belly and looked up at her his brown eyes opened and sharing.

“I trust you two and I love you with all my heart.”

She stood and walked away from the brothers.

Both Doberman’s sat and watched the party and several of Katie’s friends came over and sat with them and talked. One boy in particular was interested and he sat with them for most of the party. The boy petted both and spoke with them and when he saw his mom and dad, he said, “You two are very cool.”

B-Boy nodded and he licked the boy’s hand.

“Jack it is time to go, honey.”

“I am here mom.” He looked at both the dogs and nodded to them and Skeezer opened his eyes wide as the boy strode away.

Both of the parents turned and looked at the two brothers and both B-Boy and Skeezer turned their heads immediately.

Jack waved and said, “Bye guys. You two are awesome.”

“Should we fear?” B-Boy asked Skeezer and he stared at the back of the Jack child.

Skeezer looked at B-Boy and stammered, “I am sorry I wanted you dead.” He slid and stood side-by-side with B-Boy with their shoulders touching.

“I love you too brother,” B-Boy replied. He smiled and went to his belly and only had eyes for Katie monster.

Skeezer joined him and they watched her romp and play and have fun with the other little monster human pups.

After a moment of thought, B-Boy said to Skeezer, “We protect Katie monster and Only male and Only female. This is all that matters to me, brother.”

Skeezer nodded. “In this you are correct, B-Boy. In this, you are the wise and the smart one.” Skeezer nodded to his brother and added, “We are here to protect ours.”

B-Boy sat in the park. Skeezer sat near him and they both looked about.

New barely suspicious human named Alice watched over Katie. Katie loved her more than Patricia and Skeezer sighed.

The two brothers had originally made the other adults in the park nervous until Alice and Katie had taken them about to meet everyone.

             “She should pick one.”

B-Boy nodded. He replied, “I never did like the pit person. I don’t mind this barely suspicious ali human.”

Skeezer thought. He said, “Alice and the other was Pat and I did not like her either.”

            “I thought it was pit?”

Skeezer sighed and looked at his brother and asked, “You are teasing me?”

            B-Boy licked Skeezers' muzzle.

Skeezer laughed and said, “Besides the only reason you like this one is because she feeds us bacon when no one is watching.”

B-Boy nodded. He whispered to Skeezer, “I like bacon.”

            “I do too,” Skeezer replied.

They then sat and watched all the people in the park keeping eye on anything that could hurt Katie monster.

Katie was trying to do the monkey swing and Alice stood underneath her to catch her if she fell.

It was a hour later. Katie monster slid down the slide and giggled as Alice caught her and a man in a grey coat was standing on the edge of the gate to the park and talking to other kids. Many of the kids were standing and listening to him.

Skeezer said staring across the park, “That man is suspicious.”

B-Boy looked at Katie making castles in the sand box as Alice showed her how to use water and a bucket and then he turned and looked at the suspicious man.

He nodded and said, “You are correct. You watch him, I will watch Katie.”

Skeezer nodded. He stood and leaned against B-Boy. “He just picked up a human girl. He is now running away with her. Other humans are upset.”

The other children were screaming stranger danger and pointing.

Adults came to their feet and some were running after the abductor and some pulling out cell phones as they called 911.

B-Boy snapped his head. He said, “Tell Katie and Alice suspicious. You stay with Katie. She is ours. I will investigate if ours are in danger.” B-Boy said in a very low dangerous growl to Skeezer, “Only ours matter, brother.”

Skeezer nodded. He said, “Katie monster will be safe, brother.”

And as B-Boy went over to sniff the fence Katie screamed, “Stop him B-Boy, stop him Skeezer! He is evil bad man!”

Alice opened her cell phone and dialed 911 and Katie held tight to Alice as she watched both her brothers nod to her. They both ran and gave chase.

B-Boy looked at Only Katie monster understanding and then he raced across the playground park and leapt the fence to race after the man. He chased the man with the little girl in his arms.

Skeezer followed B-Boy and hated that B-Boy was faster. He raced along giving chase. No evil can compete with us, Skeezer thought as they tracked the evil bad man.

The bad man dropped the girl and B-Boy heard the girl scream just like Katie monster sister did the time she fell down the stairs and he ran even faster.

The man turned and held a gun and B-Boy ignored it and leapt. The bullet impacted and B-Boy tumbled head under tail to the ground. He shook his head at the pain.

The bad man dropped the gun and picked the girl up with both hands and started to run again.

Skeezer ran past his brother and leapt and took the man high about the shoulder bringing them all to the ground.

The human girl rolled away and stood still staring and screaming and B-Boy slowly got to his feet watching Skeezer. He turned and growled to the little human girl, “Run back!”

The girl looked at B-Boy understanding him and then ran back to the park and Skeezer shook the man with his mouth about the neck until the man no longer moved. Blood puddled about the man from the bites.

Skeezer walked back to B-Boy. He stood with his brother and asked, “You ok?”

“I hurt,” B-Boy said. He stood still bleeding heavily unable to take a step.

            Skeezer sat. “Will you live?”

B-Boy looked at his brother. “I doubt it,” he smiled and said, “Help me to the evil man. I must bite him so his blood is on me. Wash your face and mouth as soon as you can after.”

Skeezer nodded and together they got B-Boy to the dead human. B-Boy sunk his teeth into the human’s arm and he stood shaky. Blood streamed out of B-Boy’s side at the sudden movement.

“I hurt,” B-Boy said to Skeezer. He smiled as best he could and fell sudden to his side hard.  “Get out of here and protect Katie monster sister for us both. She is what matters. They are our responsibility.” B-Boy breathed hard and fast and he looked up at Skeezer. He said, “Protect.”

Skeezer looked at his larger brother and he nodded, turned and then ran as fast as he could back to the park. He leapt the fence, cleaned his face in the fountain and after sat at the feet of Alice staring at Katie. He thought, she is ok, B-Boy.

And at the thought Skeezer turned his head from Only Katie monster and sudden felt tremendous loss.

Katie looked down at Skeezer and started crying. She screamed and kicked and yelled, “Put me down, Alice.”

Humans suddenly swarmed the small patch of woods and a man wearing mostly yellow touched B-Boy. “Crap,” he said. “Sergeant that guy shot this dog.”

Paramedics were trying to revive the human Skeezer had attacked. They were too late. The man was dead. Most of his neck was torn away and laying in taters about the wooded site.

The Sergeant looked down at the dog. He said, “That dog killed a man.”

“Well, he is a hero then, sergeant,” the paramedic said looking up at the policeman and met the other man’s eyes.

“I suppose,” Sergeant Wilson replied.  He called it in on his radio.

Katie petted Skeezer and said soft and low; her eyes filled with tears knowing an answer she did not want to hear, “Where is B-Boy?”

            Skeezer looked at the ground.

Katie started to try and run and Alice held her back. Skeezer also got in her path and he sat blocking her.

            “No!” Katie yelled.

And as he lay on the ground B-Boy could hear Katie Monster yell his name. She screamed, “No! B-Boy, do not leave me!”

B-Boy moved his mouth and said very weak, ‘Katie Monster.’

He went unconscious with his blood leaving his body.
