Failing to the UnknownA Chapter by J_LynnIn this chapter it all begins that will put the main character into action of finding the truth before time runs out.It was a strange day and I had one serious headache to contend with as well. Flying tends to make one feel groggy but it shouldn’t if you’re an eagle. You may wonder why I decided Delta over my own wings to visit grampy in the Ozarks of Arkansas. Honestly I am not sure why myself, except that I am trying to sustain from shape shifting. I just want to be normal, and not have to hide such a big secret from every man I meet and start to fall for. It never fails they can feel that I am hiding something and they take off after growing tired of waiting for me to open up. I wonder sometimes if not shape shifting for a long period will make it go away. Kind of, like when you don’t use math for a long time you tend to forget the different order of properties to figure out a math equation. I have not shape shifted in a little less than 6 months since Jason walked out the door. Jason was my last almost permanent partner. We were engaged. Jason the typical tall blonde-haired with the perfect body, so mouthwatering. Trying to get over him is not going be an easy task. It would have made more sense to spread my wings to go visit Grampy. He thinks I waste my money when I fly in a big gawky metal thing. He hates that I feel so put out about my ability to change shape into a flying predator that is on the endangered species list. He was lucky grandma knew about the strange worlds that existed and stayed secretly hidden as regular humans in the mix of it everything. From my last visit with Grampy who use to attend secret meetings with other shape shifters said there were only 80 of the eagle variety left. This does not include the wild and free never human eagles. There population has grown since they were put on the endangered species list in 1950. Unfortunately, for our kind, there are a few normal humans who know about the mystical world and our abilities, find are kind to be freaks that do not belong on God’s creation. This means serious trouble for any shape shifter of any kind or other mystical creatures that I don’t know about. Grampy lives in a small town in North Arkansas. Gram died years back and I have been worried about Grampy since. So often, I think of moving back to be closer to him. I’ve asked Grampy to stop shape shifting, but he’s an old coot who thinks I am too young to know what’s good for me. Finally arriving in the drive, I see Grampy sitting on the front porch of his cabin that he built years ago because Grams had a thing for them. She would always say daddy I’d like to have one of those log cabins with only four rooms. A bathroom, living room, kitchen, and I bedroom. I am always overwhelmed by the simple beauty of this place in its entirety. I remember as a child exploring after Grampy told me to be safe that there were so many wonderful secrets that are still dangerous in the Ozarks. I found many of those secrets and would spend many hours exploring. Not until I was older, I realized the dangers but the memories were well worth it. As I come to a stop, I can see Grampys smile spread his face with all the love in the world. I can barely contain my excitement at the feeling of knowing such love from such a wonderful man. If I could only find a love like that in an intimate way. “Grampy what are you doing out here in the cool air. You’re going to catch a cold,” I said as I walked up the steps and over to where Grampy was sitting. Grampy said, “Never mind you that Bean, you get up here and give me a hug before I have a heart attack from heartbreak. “Oh Grampy don’t talk like that, it gives me chills. Come on I need a glass of your special ice tea.” “If you would be yourself you wouldn’t feel the weight of the world, Bean. Come on in you can grab your bags later.” “Ok, Grampy” I said as he led me in through the side door to the kitchen. After a couple hours of catching up Grampy sent me to get some sleep. Which means it was time for him to fly. I just know if he doesn’t slow down something awful is going happen, but he’s flown his whole life as a shape shifter. I don’t know how much longer he would live, if he were not able to be so free. I finished breakfast and Grampy was still sleeping, or maybe flying again. I figure his age is catching up with him after all. I put his plate into the microwave, cleaned up my mess, and headed to the shower before heading into town to pick up a few things. By the time I, left Grampy was still a no show. I jumped into my rental and headed to the small but lively town of Eureka Springs where tourist come from all over to experience its heritage and history. The passion she felt deep in her for this small town is so strong that putting it into description is nearly impossible. © 2010 J_LynnAuthor's Note
