A THREE DAY FESTIVALA Poem by Jvl narasimharao
PONGAL is a festival of three days
It is symbolic of Indian cultural ethos The first day is called Bhogi Indians celebrate it with religious piety Children wear new dresses Mothers prepare delicious dishes Everybody in the home washes their hair The villagers light the wooden fire Children throw the wreaths of cow-dung And stand around the fire in a ring The burning fire gives the villagers heat and light We burn the vices of hatred and jealousy and make our lives bright The second day is called Sankranti, the big festival The sun turns north and causes spiritual revival The third day is called Kanuma The devotees carry the hemi-spheric Prabha Which is made by fixing a colourful cloth to a wooden frame And it is brought from each village to the temple fair like in a game The bullocks dance to the sahanai tunes Children shout at the wonderful scenes This festival reminds us of our great culture Cultural uniqueness is India's feature The c**k fights add delight to the viewers Children blow the horns and the bubbles We forget all our troubles We tend to recollect our yester years Life seems to be a happy dream Our souls dance with a radiant beam © 2012 Jvl narasimharaoReviews
