The Easiest Decision

The Easiest Decision

A Story by J.R.Wampler

"The Easiest Decision"

The world ceased to be in that moment.

She stared down at her closed hand resting against her stomach and lap. Her eyelashes danced gently up and down as her eyes traced the dry subtle web of wrinkles covering her knuckles. She looked without really seeing. Lips slightly apart, her breathing slowed as she sat perched on the edge of her bed.

Inside her brain, at the very back crown of her head, images of his face played out around her. How wonderful relaxation looked on his face. It was rare for him to look at her but she hardly ever took her gaze off of him. His smile captured her. It was stupid little smirk that made her sink into herself as she studied his dull stubble. The goofy perkiness of his ears were almost feline-like.

Awed at his imperfectness she once stretched out her hand to rub her thumb across his rough chin and up his cheek resting it and her forefinger over the edge of his ear. His skin was the best quilted mix of soft and scruff threaded together with freckles.

Love.

It was soft; a want and an admiration warmly glowing in her chest and slowly rising up to choke her. She had the choice to swallow it and wave it out of her mind. But she didn't. Throat tight, she fell back onto her bed accepting this new feeling.

Love.
