Spring - A Villanelle

Spring - A Villanelle

A Poem by JohnL

PRAISE THE LORD FOR SPRING

Come let us sing a song of joy to Spring,
Let blossom make our hearts be glad and gay
Sing loud, for music is a joyful thing

The flowers arise to make our spirits sing
Bright colours see the newborn light of day
Come. Let us sing a song of joy to Spring.

God is praised when avian voices ring,
And coloured carpets brightening tributes pay.
Sing loud, for music is a joyful thing.

Shout, shout for joy to welcome in the King.
Wave Easter’s palm to decorate His way.
Come! Let us sing a song of joy to Spring.

Winter would be a grey and dismal thing
Without Spring’s hopeful, winging ray.
Sing loud, for music is a joyful thing.

The birds and flowers, nascent beauties bring
Offering Son et Lumière’s  array.
Come! Let us sing a song of joy to Spring.
Sing loud for music is a joyful thing.

It would seem that the Villanelle, a format I discovered and discarded on the same day,
fifteen years ago, is determined to have me, after all. I discovered "markymark", and his
villanelles moved me to finally create my first, "Old Soldier", about a week ago. I would
appreciate your input, as a writer of many different of the old forms. I apparently had
never read enough of them to appreciate the artistry required to make my first and third
lines ao amenable to multiple applications! "Song of Joy" and "Sing Loud!" are such lines!

A most inspiring and well crafted villanelle piece in both form and content

John, this is a wonderful piece of writing....Just like a Easter song of praise and prayer. Liked this one a lot.
