Thoughts On Relaxation In the Hills

Thoughts On Relaxation In the Hills

A Poem by JohnL

Thoughts On Relaxation Above the Côtes d’Azur

Thyme in the mountain grass
Tangs the air with herbs;
Sheep masticate,
Seasoning  themselves
In advance, while
Sun-spread odours ride the zephyrs,
 Of this golden day.

A bell tolls - - miles away;
Drifts, - - - faint on bee-balm breeze.
How strange that a soul should choose
To leave the world on a day like this,
Herb-green over a blue, distant
Mediterranean
Centring the earth.

Cow-bells mark a passing herd
So slow, so relaxed,
Only their milk
Is in suspense.
I sit, heat-haze-bound on my mountain;
Cicadas adding pizzicato
To the orchestra,
Which carries me into Arcadia
On the honey, as yet uncollected,
Unmade, still drifting
On the sweet mountain air.

A delightful pastoral. I like the double meaning of thyme/time and love the wit of the sheep seasoning themselves. Great observation and refreshing to read a poem centred so strongly in the reality and beauty of nature.

So utterly and completely beautiful .. idyllic. Your descriptions reach incredible heights of imagination, 'think because they're wrapped in personal feelings, memories.

' Herb-green over a blue, distant / Mediterranean / Centring the earth. ' = few words, immense imagery.

As always, thank you for sharing such amazing words.. finely formatted, fine everything.

aw, John, this is exactly what I needed today. I relaxing getaway. A moment suspended in time away from my desk and the urgent Monday's business.

Thanks so much for sending it my way!!!!
