Musings on South America - John L. Berry
There was an old man of the sonnet,
The grey matter under his bonnet
Was addled 'tis true,
But I can assure you
His scansion was great! Count upon it.
Said friend, “Where would you like to go?
Write about a place that you don’t know.”
He wrote of a filly
He’d ridden in Chile
When visiting Valparaiso.
She said “That’s no good ‘cos you’ve been.
You must write about what you ain’t seen.”
So he wrote about Incas
And Pizzaro’s stinkers
Stealing gold for Spain’s greedy old queen.
Macchu Picchu the Don never reached,
Its mighty walls never were breached.
‘Twas up high in the mountains,
Irrigated by fountains,
Where loudly the giant condor screeched.
“I cannot walk up there” he said
“By the time I got up, I’d be dead
In a permanent shroud
Of impervious cloud,
So I’ll ‘hitch’ with a condor instead.
