Black

Black

A Poem by JMariah

I am the raven,
a silent black space
behind a knot
in a tree,
the deep, hollow breath
of thick shadows
that whisper secrets
to the night.

I am the silhouette
of budding acacias,
umbrellas
over weary elephants
yawning in the shade.
And I am the low rumble
from purring throats
sweeping across the grasses
of the warm earth.

I am the stillness
before lightning scratches
across a purple-blue sky,
soft after-glow
left behind the eyes
when the world fades back
to black.

I am the rich red earth
that formed me
in my mother’s womb,
the sculpted ebony wood
from the banks of the Sand River.

I am the eye
swooping down on desert dunes
and palm groves.
I am the dance of wings
against the African sky.
And I am the raven.

Excellent poem! I'm very much attracted to poems that don't rhyme but it does take some skill to piece it together correctly which you have done superbly. Bravo!

beautiful! all of your images were really good. your words flow perfectly.

my favorite part:

I am the silhouette
of budding acacias,
umbrellas
over weary elephants
yawning in the shade.
And I am the low rumble
from purring throats
sweeping across the grasses
of the warm earth.

The depth and beauty of this is nothing short of phenomenal. I quickly read it a second time so I could, once again, feel and breathe and share in it's majesty, soaking it in like rain to the parched earth. Brilliant!

Oh, this is very beautiful. I love it. It has a calmness about it and it takes me on a journey, and a nice one with a raven. This is wonderful as well as the entire poem, just love this verse:

I am the rich red earth
that formed me
in my mother's womb,
the sculpted ebony wood
from the banks of the Sand River.

Ah, I am feeling bliss at this moment. Your talent is inspiring I love the detailed descriptive words that just flow along effortlessly. I loved the second to last paragraph the very best.

I am the rich red earth
that formed me
in my mother's womb,
the sculpted ebony wood
from the banks of the Sand River

I hope to one day, when I am wiser and mature, put my pen to paper and have something like this come out of me.

This poem is exquisite, your use of vocabulary and the way your language flows is absolutely beautiful. You inspire me so much to just keep on writing and putting more of my gift out there.

Thank so much, and many blessings.

This is truly a visual masterpiece!! You had me from start to finish. "I am the rich red earth that formed me
in my mother's womb, the sculpted ebony wood from the banks of the Sand River." I loved the entire piece, but this passage moved me deeply. You are very talented my friend.

This is beautiful. "Black" has as much imagery and emotion as if it were published as a picture book--and yet would look as nice as one. I love "Black", I can only praise this piece.
