Sonnet 3

Sonnet 3

A Poem by Jeremy Baker

My lustful love for you, beguiling all,

Tarpeia, the Queen of contradiction.

Tarnish desire, to bring about my fall:

and prove again pure love is pure fiction.

A glass, a vat, of wine to toast your crown,

you love your lies, your truth is so abstruse.

A virgin queen you shall remain alone;

not one can pass; their charms are of no use.

And yet I still shall seek your hand to wed,

although I know the darkness in your heart.

Though men pursue you only to your bed,

you ne’er were hit by wing’ed Cupid’s dart.

A Vestal Virgin never made good wife;

so why, good men, accept unruly strife?

Another sonnet? You are on a roll, JB. I really enjoyed reading this. And iambic pentameter as well! The rhythm is outstanding and, as always, you display that knack for putting the right word in the right place. We have all known a Tarpeia - the mix of cynicism and romantic thought actually works a treat. Well done!

This is an exquisite and tasteful work of lyrical beauty and literary craft! "you love your lies, your truth is so abstruse." this line is my favourite, it contains a delightful play of assonance and consonance highlighting the musicality of your piece. This poem is sublime! This is Art.

This poem takes you to another world and another time. It is a journey in which to escape for a few moments. This was done extremely well and I love the story that is woven into this piece. Cold hearted virgin queen and the poor soul who really wants to marry her.

I "did not" need a dictionary for this, lol. Very well spoken.

And yet I still shall seek your hand to wed,
although I know the darkness in your heart.

He saw the beauty inside that was deep, despite the fact it was mixed with plenty of darkness. Others only wanted her for her outer beauty, but she sent messages of coldness, leaving her to be alone.

A virgin queen you shall remain alone;"

You have a wide range of vocabulary and I have difficulty understanding some of the deep words. I have to consult a dictionary everytime I see new words. I learned from your sonnet and I like how you picked fascinating words. It looks more like a diary or a love letter but anyway, you have an amazing literature here.

. first off, i truly admire anyone who can do justice to a form ... requires commitment and passion that i simply do not have despite my many efforts ... more importantly ... this is a fascinating insight into a particular perspective ... superbly expressed throughout and summarized brilliantly in the last two lines ...
