Dolphins

Dolphins

A Poem by John Sullivan

we swim in packs
the currents of time
and
place

sacred traveler
Apollo's changeling face
steadfastly
guide me
through
this
solemn
race

the silver sands
of the echoing shores
juxtapose
the
darkness
of
the deep

the water's crest
descending
cover this time
that we
keep

wrap me in the raiment of Achilles
still my beating heart
swim silent seas stretched vast
the God's ancient art

Author's Note

John Sullivan
So in writer's group we were asked to write about dolphins. Now I know fuck-all about dolphins and don't particularly like them, but this is what I and a few Google searches came up with...

I like dolphins so the title drew me to this poetic journey through the ebb and flow of life's currents. 🐬💙

Good old Google .. between the pair of ya you both did good (intentionally understated) .. I on the other hand have a passion for dolphins, porpoise & whales .. indeed I attend a quarterly whale watch within a mile of where I live .. for scientific purposes you understand .. 🐬🐋🐬🐳🐟 ... N :)

I have seen dolphins swimming at sea. In Torbay near Brixham. It was a delight to behold. They swam alongside a boat taking us back to Brixham from Torquay. The sea was sparkling and the movement of those creatures so playful. It brightened the day of many. They came close to greet us. Wonderful creatures. Now I need to Google to find out so
much more. Thank you John. Your poem filled my mind with beautiful imagery. We are back in Brixham in two weeks. I hope we see dolphins. Have a great weekend. Your classes must be fun.

Thank you John :)
I live by the sea and have always found, even the sight of dolphins a treat.
If I understand correctly, they are one of nature's more intelligent creatures sometimes instigating harmless personal contact with humans, with Achilles possibly
being one......??
I think this is the first time I have seen juxtapose used on WC (LOL)

You don't like Dolphins. Shame on you John. With that noted exception this is an excellent use of words. I could feel the ocean. And I have a resident school of Common Dolphins in the Sea Lochs around here. So there. By the way a pack of Dolphins is called a pod. Just suggesting.

Dolphins are smart stunning silver creatures who dance through the sea and mimic many of man's behaviors... they are friendly creatures, specially with humans; they learn and they love, just like us....what more can i say?
Swim with them and you will know and come to love them as I do....

Sorry, couldnt resist a hitchhikers guide to the galaxy reference.
I used to go to a writing group, pre covid. I loved the word or photo prompts, but finally left after wondering why it mostly consisted of pensioners, who mostly had an interest but what that was was hidden deep in tge folds of tea and cake, while they bored me telling me about how their grandkid lost a tooth.
The final straw was when one genius decided we had to erite anout being a woman! All 4 guys and 6 pensioners!
I reckon no one went back the next week, but ill never know.
They do look like tthey know what theyre doing. And thst is my experoence of dolphins, well apart from they like to talk to the ferry passengers going to the islands. I think they think were a fishing boat! And thry are meant to be as smart as us!
Maybe one will come along with an "eee, eeeeeeh review and we can all stop wondering 😊
