"As for me, I came here not just to share my writing but to learn as well. If it wasn't for suggestions from Rick Puetter and Girl Friday (see below) I don't think the poem would have been as good. The poet Richard also helped me fine tune the poem and it is now--after all these years--(in my mind) complete.

It just a hangout for writers and poets to post and read; bounce ideas around, swap reviews, inspire and uplift each other. That's how I see it. I don't take any of the "top writing" etc. stuff seriously. I can't. I've read some of it.

To me this place is therapy. To most people here it is a source of emotional supply, a little ego boost outside of mainstream social media, it makes us feel "creative". Be nice or you will be stigmatized here. There is a pop group here, they work together when they are offended. edit: yes, there are moderators here... some people just can't take it when it's not exactly how they want it... so they pretend no one's watching when in reality, the moderators are just letting the kids have a temper tantrum. Most complaints are just perceived grievance... it's a creative writing site... go figure.

I would honestly love to see more people answer these questions as well. I’ve never really thought about it much and I guess what it means to me has changed over the years. For me it’s a place to share what I write with people that get it because I rarely feel comfortable sharing it with people in my life (so far that hasn’t been a complete loss but one day I hope to be able to share it with them as well). It’s a place to get feedback although that used to be a lot better than it is now. It’s also just a place to build a community. I wish the owner would hand it off to a group of us that are still active and let us police the site because it has spawned some unfortunate issues that could so easily be dealt with.

What are some of the issues? I'm not savvy enough here to be familiar with them. But I do love the site and I am so grateful I posted this question, it's been very enlightening and given me a broader perspective!

There's lots of spam, of varying degrees and types. A lot of businesses (mainly non US based by there's some of both) who think it's a place to advertise their extremely niche businesses (i.e. roofing in St. Paul, Minnesota or steel manufacturing in India). Some people think it's really fun to spam their ads as reviews. There's always been the "spell casters" who claim to operate over the phone. There's random asian language accounts that post gibberish (or at least google translate can't make it into anything coherent). There's many (far too many) people who just post explicit content bordering on porn (nothing wrong with more mature content on the site but there are ways to do it right and ways that are clearly just someone being voyeuristic). And then there's the absolutely unhinged behavior certain other individuals chose to display where they just spout their crazy conspiracy theories everywhere and attack other people, hopefully you won't meet any of those but if you do just delete and block. Oh and the people who think that they are the absolute authority on writing and pick on other writers from a misplaced sense of superiority.
