Madonna's LetterA Chapter by HuhKally is a 21-year-old female who admitted to Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital (MRH), Lincoln Traumatic Brain Injury Unit on 11/07/2023. She suffered a traumatic brain injury on 09/13/2023 during a motor vehicle accident. The patient’s car was T-boned on the driver side, and then traveled off the road and struck a fence. Reportedly, patient had a loss of consciousness when EMS arrived on scene and performed extrication and rapid sequence intubation. She was admitted to MRH with deficits in areas of orientation, memory, expressive and pragmatic language, attention and concentration. Continued observations and consultations with her Speech Language Pathologist, Occupational Therapist, and Physical Therapist note that she consistently engages in aggressive and impulsive behavior that can be hard to redirect and that she is frequently disoriented. Her therapists report that she is making progress, and at the time of discharge/transition, they expect the patient will be able to increase participation in ADL’s/functional activities. Currently, Ms. Oliva Whitman is experiencing significant cognitive deficits requiring assistance with multiple wants and needs. Ms. Oliva Whitman is unable to adequately provide for her own health care needs or financial responsibilities and is equally unable to provide for her own food, clothing, safety and shelter. She has demonstrated positive improvement in physical activity, occupational therapy, ambulation, and cognition at this time. The assignment of a guardian is recommended to ensure facilitation of safe decision making, procure for ongoing needs, and support her best interest for continual recovery. It is difficult to predict recovery timelines, therefore, I would suggest the court reassess need for continued guardianship at a future time. Dr. JR, PhD Neuropsychologist © 2024 Huh |
