The Prometheus Ascension

The Prometheus Ascension

A Poem by JHByrd

“The Prometheus Ascension”

-J.H. Byrd-

He spoke, his voice like a drum,
“Destiny is mine to come.
Fellow men, our hands begun
the twisted toils of our benighted labor,
the broken and once cherished dream.
Find now alive!
Here, where the savages dwell and contrive
the realm of thinking from which you were wrought.
Find now the civility of the beast.
Find now alive,
your waking souls!”

This charge upon us took,
as fire is cast to iron, swords bathed in blood,
and wrought within us an ideology
to resist the tempting flood.

Together we sang, asunder our cry,
together we live, combined we die.
Onto whitened shores and the Isles of Evermore,

the flame of Prometheus ran its course.

“Here is the strange life,

stretched out over limitless waste.
Straight to the jaws of the fatal enemy of all mortal things,
where such foul claws would draw the curtains upon any king.
Records forgot, thrones to dust,
in the fruitless life the dead lie
and their marks of honor rust.

The same abyss has returned for me
and this time I cannot resist.

Greet our brothers with open arms,
no more trepidation.
I have seen the world and the sufferings within,
and I will have no part.

I give myself to the abyss.
I fill cup with blood.
I fill lungs with smoke.
I charge ever long into the battlefield;
Never to return.

Here I am, a ghost among a million faces.
Here I am, broken against the walls of stasis.
These fractured dreams are the ballast upon

which the tempest was forged,
and I dream no more.”
