The Best Images

a poem about a poet's images

 

 

 

They can be lovely or dramatic

or ugly and absurd

Sometimes they're rather funny

or sad beyond my words

 

The images I work with

can be my friends or foes

They can be quite annoying

and drive me nuts before I'm old

 

Sometimes they come and bop me

in the kisser before dawn

so I can't sleep a wink

before I turn my PC on

 

I have to let those babies out

They spring onto my page

and dance there very merrily

like they've escaped a cage

 

I love to see them magically

explode before my face

and cavort like little children

or jack rabbits in a race

 

But other times they go to sleep

and though I scream a lot

they absolutely won't wake up

They tie my stomach in a knot

 

I get disturbed and worried

Will my images return?

Without my inspiration

I'll have lots of time to burn

 

How is it the best images

pal around with certain poets

Do they take them out to lunch

or is it luck to which they owe it?

 

When I figure out the answer

I'll publish a great book

With poets it'll be a hit

Hi Joyce. A very good write about the creative process of the poet. Clever word play. Skillfully crafted free style metered rhyming poetry which I enjoy. Good imagery, flow and tone. Line to line transition and breaks are done well. Very nice rhythm and enjambment. Nice use of metaphor. Rhyme is good, a nice mix of near rhyme and perfect feminine and masculine end line rhyme that is executed well in this piece. Lovely depth of feeling in expression of your inspiration for writing as well as the times when as writers we go blank as though we've lost our 'muse' that I can relate to very well. Good word choice. I enjoy the humor of your poem. Well penned and a much enjoyed read. Write on!

I thought might be the case but then I remembered some of the great ones you have put out recently and thought that can't be the case. Like I said before, your poetry is absolutely engaging and always masterfully penned. I think we are sometimes are worse critics.

Such a wonderful thing to think and say, Pryde. I'm afraid this was written a few years ago and since I've gravitated completely to the tanka world, the only poem I've written that's longer than five lines is "The ABC? Halloween Party" I wrote for the ABC? Contest on WC. My mind just sems to condense all its poetic thoughts into five lines now. Maybe if I read enough longer poems, I'll be able to write longer poems again. Who knows? Many thanks for your very nice reply to my last comment. You are a good friend.

Many just don't think they're complete or creative enough I guess. The Japanese have an entirely different mindset towards poetry. They don't tell, they suggest, and let the reader co-write their poems. I think that's very special and admire it greatly. Guess I'll have to post some of my shorter poems or run out of poems altogether. Sigh . . .

My feel is really great poetry should be immediate and involve the reader in coming to conclusions or applying the final coat of colour if you will. Of course, everyday on here I read pieces that break my idea of what it means to be those things.

This is a wonderful take on the creative process. It does differ some, poet to poet, but at the end of the first draft the feeling is communal. Did I write this? And where the hell did it come from?

the images of my mind sometime they are there sometime I am blind
so I move to the heart and soul there I find images of gold some say the poetry comes from the heart
and some say the soul but when we have given them birth I love to watch them grow
