Bar

Bar

A Poem by J. F. Charleston

Bar

Sat down for a beer
The local bar full
This Friday night
Called my girl a few times
Two rings and a voicemail
It seemed oh so clear

The suds ran down
Chilling the whole way
I stared down that glass
To drown myself out

A man sat down next to me
“You wonder who’s cheatin who”
He looked straight ahead,
I stared at him,
His mustache widened into a smile
I looked down to a shot of whiskey

I’m sitting here at a lonely bar
She’s out with someone

“I let her lie” started to play
I continued to drink
Daryle sat down next to me
“You let her lie, didn’t ya?”
He pat my shoulder, went astray

Another drink down, another memory
Her brown hair in the sun
Her smile on mine
Her eyes in the moonlight
Lying to myself to be fine

Another drink, another friend
Keith walked up, took a beer
Asked, “you wish you didn’t know now
What you didn’t know then?”
I wish I could start over again

I thought it’d be simple
Love would be enough
This bar is my escape
So I thought

I got a call from Mark,
He just wanted me to know
I should just let her go

What’s the point of it all
She’s not in my pickup
I’m not in her mind
My life is in this cup
I can’t just hit rewind

I’m sitting here feeling sorry
With only the radio, a bottle of whiskey
My friends trying to help with their songs
