Desperation

Desperation

A Poem by J. F. Charleston

Worries consume me
the stresses of the world
and the insecurity is overwhelming
it's like I can never be set free

I look to the Lord for help
He's watching me, observing
He's waiting for the right time
when I'm about to go crazy

I feel guilt for wanting more
but the truth is I need more

His blessings were great
they gave my family money
they gave a running car

But a family of four
that has different places to go
with different things to do
can only do so much keeping cool

I look to the Lord for help
He's watching me, observing
He's waiting for the right time
when I'm about to go crazy

Asking for rides home and all
makes me feel uncomfortable
it's worse to ask for a truck
the embarrassment of it
trying to get one with no luck

I'm losing my mind slowly
it hurts and feel bad
it makes me think I'm not grateful
when I keep looking for more

What am I to do?
I can't sit and wait
the more I work,
the more it seems impossible

I'm praying and working
for another truck
to ease this headache

I look to the Lord for help
He's watching me, observing
He's waiting for the right time
when I'm about to go crazy

I wish this weren't so common, especially here in Texas. The drought has turned our lakes into deserts, and businesses in small towns just can't survive. Your poem is heartbreaking and apt for our time.

Your voice is very authentic and creates a compelling empathy. Some stanzas need more concrete details to give them the weight they could have ("different places to go/different things to do").

I like it, though. It's relatable with good flow.

You told a real story. Most of us are holding out on a thread of hope. Take one thing to put us into debt. I hope things are better. Thank you for sharing your words and poetry.
