Broken Hearted Lover

Broken Hearted Lover

A Poem by J. F. Charleston

She doesn't trust my intentions
I don't blame her one bit
all the guys that lied and cheated
left her in a crying fit

She says she doesn't want
another broken heart,
to be fooled and victimized
so she pleaded with my heart

My heart said I won't break your heart
I'll do what I can on my part
I'll show up when no one else will
I'll warm you when you feel a sudden chill
and I'll love you until I die

She said if you're going to love me
then love me with all you've got
and don't break my heart

I told her that I'd do my best
to love her with all I have
it might not be the best
nor the greatest, but that's
what I've got to give

As her lover, I'll show her my devotion
show her what I mean by love
hold her tight in my arms
on my truck under the moon above

She took my hand, held it tight
swung our arms as we walked
gave each other a hug and kiss
and parted for the night
and had everything to miss

I called her up around midnight
she couldn't sleep either
she said that she wanted me near
I said I'd be there in just a jiffy
when I rolled up, she came runnin'
and we hit the river with my new fishin' gear

We sat alone together
the moon light reflecting off the water
and into her green eyes

She cuddled up into my arms
and she said if you're going to love me
then love me with all you've got
and don't break my heart

She told me that she wondered
if I thought about her everyday
and if I could barely breathe
when I'm not around her

I told her that I could barely breathe
when I'm around her and I thought
of her all the time, and I couldn't
stand not being with her

She said if you're going to love me
then love me with all you've got
and don't break my heart

She says she doesn't want
another broken heart,
to be fooled and victimized
so she pleaded with my heart

My heart said I won't break your heart
I'll do what I can on my part
I'll show up when no one else will
I'll warm you when you feel a sudden chill
and I'll love you until I die

A beautiful poem for love. Hard to re-open a broken heart. I like the story in the poem. Allowed the reader to understand her fear and the desire to love and protect. I enjoyed the poem. Many good titles for the poem. (A love journey) or (Don't break my heart). Thank you for sharing the excellent poetry.

The way her fears of recommitting after being hurt before are understood and the devotion and love he has for her is so sweet and refreshing.

Such a beautiful piece. I love the repetition of the one verse, it gives a lyrical and melodic tone to the poem.

Lyrical.. this is a song?

I know from where this fear comes.. every man in my life but one hurt me terribly and as a result I cannot trust.. even the one that never hurt me I keep at a distance afraid to let my guard down. Relate-able piece for me.. the togetherness near the end was very nice.. shallimarRose
