The Little Colt

The Little Colt

A Poem by J. F. Charleston

It wasn't so long ago

when she gave birth

to the playful colt

that sprints around

this ranch of mine

She used to be a racer

fast and elegant

giving all she had

Races here and there

across the state,

then the country

her reputation grew

faster than she ran

Now, she's a mother

to a little colt

he runs and plays

and she puts up

with his ways

He's up and wide eyed

before I am in the morning

he prances around in the stall

while his mother sleeps

soundly away as dawn falls

His joy of running

will gain him a title

his speed so cunning

he fills every step

This little colt

from a retired racer

is the greatest joy

of our lives...

I did. And you're very right on all of it.
Photo and words were amazing. Would be wonderful to be able to watch a colt grow into a champion like her mother. Thank you for sharing the outstanding poetry.

Yw :)
What a charming poem, such beauty and magnificence. I felt the pride coming through this read...I can relate to this, even though it's about horses, mothers all feel the same about their proud offspring.
