The Wilderness

The Wilderness

A Poem by J. F. Charleston
"

A little about it...

"

Hills roll

mountains scratch the sky

rivers bend and twist

throughout the vast land

A trail so traveled

by so many whom sought great fortune

a river and cliff searched

for a mineral that would change

one's life and then so many after

Danger and uncertainty

lies within the wilderness

snakes and beasts

tribes of natives

Nothing is what it seemed

farmers went for a better harvest

hunters for a better price

business men for better profit

government for power

The wild consumed

in old tradition

the freedom of the land

no longer felt

Wilderness... was it remembered?

Was it thought of? Was it meant to be found?

The Wilderness was once

safe and sound...

The emotions I felt reading this were 180's of each other. At one moment I was in wonder thinking back to high school and old west history lessons...then to the sadness of the injustices done to a people who we could've learned so much from if we just took the opportunity placed before us...then to the anger and sense of wrongness that most everything in life (of great significance these days) seems to but motivated by power and wealth...never mind the little common man who gets lost between which government ...ya know I really should just stop there... I liked this piece because it has us thinking if all that's lost...was...could've been ...and maybe what we should be holding onto while we still are able. Very powerful piece. Bravo to you!!! :)

Yes that's what it feels like. Yeah, I think this place has some sort of advantage.

This is a very nice honoring the wilderness of nature. Being in the Dakota's I am fortunate to be in an area that still has a fair amount of wide open spaces, such as West Texas, and it is some of the most beautiful landscape one could imagine. We like to say it is our best kept secret, and we don't want any more people here ! :) Any way, thanks for the tribute to Mother Nature.
