A Poem on Self-controlA Poem by John CarverTHE FUTURE IS YOURS To the young men and women of this age Which some are but not because I'm superior Yet due to my age I profess some wisdom and sage As when little ones you were not allowed certain things For they made you unmanageable and now not your own But responsible to the Father and to manage which it brings To your readiness good works that he has sown For the body is pure if you make it that for sure So do not drink things that do not lead to this: The excitement of the Spirit to endure As you work signs and wonders in youthful bliss For self-control is required of such workmen But be bold in prayer that God might shine on you And send a miracle to others then Believe without hesitation, it will be true Or prophesy or just bear fruit of who comes For the Father says, "You can do anything You set your mind to," I say, "In bigger sums," But if you have nothing to say when he comes then sing And listen to what he said there in your voice But even self-controlled it is your choice.
