The Pickup Artist

He spots her in Produce fondling a Romaine head.

Gearing his cart into Neutral, he waits.

~

She nestles the lettuce in her basket, strolls on.

~

He shifts into first and follows at a distance.

~

In Salad Dressings she adds a jar of Caesar and checks her raven hair 

on her mirror app. In Dairy she selects a Mozzarella packet.

~

Caressing a French loaf in Bakery, she breathes in its aroma

and stands it up, snug between the Romaine and cheese.

~

Nearing Wines his pulse quickens as she picks up two whites

and scans the labels.

~

He gears into Park. Showtime. Silently rehearsing his line, he steps forward.

~

"Chablis or Chardonnay?" she asks him, turning.
