Flight of a LarkA Poem by J. C. Koch
They say if you love something
You should set it free, let it go And if it happens to come back to you Then its truly and forever yours. But whatever could happen When it was never yours But you're too scared to let it go? When you envy the sky itself For being able to embrace the lark You become green and hideous A monster that only wishes to consume Destined to burn down the world Fated to be the death of the lark that you love Fly away lark, fly away Don't let my claws near you The scars I leave are too hideous The wounds I inflict fester and burn Fly away, fly away The dark is my home While your place is in the sun Promise me someday When I'm not so green When Envy isn't my name anymore When I can endure the morning sun Fly back to me, fly home Just so I can hear you sing again Just so I may watch you fly
